Cannot defrag my harddrive. I scan the disc and it completes the scan and says found no errors.

I than try to defrag and it starts until it hits 4% than it stops and a message appears.
disc contains errors that must be repaired click help carry out instructions for repairing errors and try to defrag again.
    ID NO DEFRAG 004.

The insructions say to scan disc.

This is a 20 gig UltraATA harddrive on a windows 98, 2nd edition operating system. Defrag was working three months ago.

I tried to defrag in safe-mode same problem.
I tried use run and msconfig, restart and same problem.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

    Merci beaucoup.

Have you thought about a different version of defrag.exe
I'm running win98se but i changed my defrag.exe to the winME
    version, works great and faster.
this is a page with the ME defrag info on it.
you can rename your win98 defrag exe defrag.old
then drop winME defrag.exe into windows folder.
It will be used the next time you open defrag.

    Re: win ME defrag.exe

Tried to download via your link, but they say page not available and when we ask for help to find Win ME defrag.exe they don't
show this item. Even searching in Google I can't seem to find this software. Perhaps you have another source.

    Please advise

    Hi Mike,

You might want to try a diagnostic utility from the HDD mfgr.. Should be available for download from the mfgr's website.

    Good Luck,
    Tin

    Hi all!

I got my ME Defrag Here.

I think Tinknocker is giving you some good advice. It's likely you have a disk problem but it won't hurt to try ME Defrag though.

    Hi Tin

Thank you all for good advise

I downloaded the ME defrag.exe thanks to Zepher
and the defrag stalled again at 4%. I'm beginning to think
that I may have a hard drive problem.
This drive is 20 gigs. 10 on drive "C" and 10 on drive "D" .
The defrag works on the "D" drive.
My next step would be to do as Tinknocker suggested and
download a utility, but the company you suggested HDD mfgr.
I could not find . Do you have the site address?

    Merci
    Mike

Sorry Mike, so many things get abreviated here to save keystrokes. I was refering to the manufacturer of your hard disk drive, e.g. Maxtor, Western Digital, IBM, Fugitsu,etc..

A google search should return their website. The utility will probably be found on a support page or download page.

    Tin
