I was wondering if using defrag utility too often would wear out
    your hard drive.
And what would be the recomended time period or hours of operation before defragging.

I doubt you would notice the difference in a hundred year due to extra wear caused by running defrag.

The amount of disk activity is the most important factor in determining how often to defrag. Typical casual users would be on a monthly basis while most power users should defrag weekly.

Frankly, I go for months (like 6 maybe) without it and when I defrag, still can't tell any difference. It's a little overrated since the newer drives are so fast.

Another factor to consider, if you don't defrag, how much more wear is imposed due to head movement to gather the scattered data. It's probably a push with the wear caused by defragging.

ps. Forgive my attempt at concealed humor in the first line.

You are probably right since a hard drive is supposed to only last
    about 5 yrs.
I thought the writing process is what is the hardest on the HD.
Heard that is what wears out the surface.
Since defrag has to move files, thought it might be unnecessary
wear and tear to defrag too much.

    Thanks
