    Compaq Presario 5001SR
    800Mhz AMD Duron
    64Mbye memory
    8Mbyte Nvidia TNT2/Vanta LT

Recent Win:98se install. Computer runs along perfectly in anything I do with it. BUT as soon as I derfrag the Hdd or run scandisk I have to boot to safe mode the nezt time I use the computer or if I re-boot after defrag. If I go to display adapter settings while in safe mode the "refresh" rate says "unknown ".
I then change it to adapter default or optmal and things go along great until the next time I use Defrag. Have downloaded from Compaq the video card drivers and even updated the cmos but still same problem. Have also installed the latest version of defrag utility from M/S.. Any ideas..Thanks ..Den.......

    Hi Dennis,
I'm not quite sure I'm getting the details of your problem correctly. The description seems a bit scrambled. Am I to understand that you have to run scandisk or defrag in safemode and upon a reboot you have to reset your video preferences (specifically the refresh rate). In any case you may wish to rethink and reword this so the issues can be sorted.

Also this may have sat unanswered for a time because the help-net's database of past posts, on both scandisk/defrag issues and video display problems, are overflowing with information. Have you used the search function of the board? If after doing so and you still have questions or need help, either further explanations (because you didn't quite understand something) or step-By-step help (because you found something but are unsure of how to do it) tack it into your post. I or another would be more than happy to walk you through what you found.

    Defrag causes problems on re-boot

Thanks fer your repley and sorry if description of problem caused confusion. Problem is basically this; if I run defrag in the normal mode and THEN re-boot the computer I will get the blue screen screeen that basically says vxd problems. Quite lengthy but looks like driver problem. Any how, I then need to shutdown, go to safe mode, change REFRESH rate from UNKNOWN to ADAPTER DEFAULT, re-boot and then all is okay. Did read the B/board but nothing like I mentioned above described. I "never" have to do the re-fresh safe mode thing if I DO-NOT defrag the Hdd....Den...............

You have a Compaq Presario 5001SR with which I am in no way familiar with but this reads very much like a Video driver problem.

    What I would like to suggest is;

    Uninistalling the Video drivers.

Make sure the Video is set to Standard VGA 640x480 16 color settings and restart the machine.

See what the results are with defrag etc.

If all is OK then reinstall the desired Video drivers AFTER restarting the machine again.

Many times Video ( and other ) drviers WILL NOT re-install properly if there exists any chance of even part of the older drivers being used. And this condition may well exist if the Video is not set back to standard VGA and the machine restarted at least once.

I have found over the years that the above suggestions are best to use whenever upgrading Video drivers. Because if there are files of the same name that need to be overwritten they may not get done Properly because Windows has a tough time overwriting IN USE files.

Video drivers can be a BIG pain.

I have had to use my suggestions on my own ( self built ) machine(s) MORE THAN ONCE.
