    How do I change the default icon in a program on win7x64

    Program icon on the Desktop or on the Start Menu?

    Desktop - right click on the icon > Properties > Change icon. A list of available icons within that program will be shown. Select one of those or hit the Browse button and navigate to %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll for the standard Windows icons.

    Alternatively if you have a specialised icon in a folder that you want to use navigate to that folder and select the icon.

    For programs listed on the start menu you follow the same procedure, but the option to Change icon will not be available for some programs.

    thanks for your quick response but I think I asked the wrong question
    I would like to to change the system icons for extensions like the compression folder with the little zipper for the ZIP EXTENSION & I would like to change the word pad icon for RTF EXTENSION I a few others

    Thanks again Pete but nothing sounds great.....guess I'll just leave icons as is
    Win XP was much easier to work with:(
