When I create a new WordPad folder, the font is always Times New Roman (Western). I can open the folder and change it to anything else and it'll stay. But I want it to open in that anything else the first time. Is there a way to change the default during creation? (This is WordPad in Windows ME, but the question might apply to other systems.)

    Hello Kingman,
If memory serves me correct, there is no way to set or change Wordpads default font of Times Roman on a permanent basis. The nature or use of rtf files (rich text format), is to allow the opening, display or pasting of a doc file using the formatted text it was written in. I guess the "powers that be" decided there was no sense in allowing a user to change font preference on any "permanent" basis. However, there is a work around. This involves the making of a template document. You'll be making a blank doc and after setting and saving your personal preferences for "tab, font and size ", you can choose that blank doc as a shortcut to open wordpad with. Here's a link with the directions included:

Please note: the directions provided by the link also include a tweak that makes wordpad open in the new template, (that you have made), rather than it's own. You can use this tweak or if you prefer, just keep the shortcut to the new template file handy and remember to open wordpad by clicking on the template shortcut.

Thank you, Ann. It worked. Sort of. When I clicked Start, Programs, Accessories, WordPad, I was able to change the font. And when I used that procedure again, new documents had the right font.
But sometimes I create a new document in a folder with right-click, New, WordPad Document. It's still the default font and I can't change it. Oh, well, at least one method works.
I'd already managed to change the default fonts for Outlook Express. Now here's one more annoyance out of the way. Only three kazillion to go.

Your most welcome and I was happy to help. There is a fix for the right click shellnew wordpad doc but your better off not hacking or tweaking to far off from the defaults. I find that sooner or later this kind of tweaking will come back to bite ya', particularly when enough time has elapsed that you've forgotten "how you made it do what it's doing" in the first place. :)

An alternative maybe looking a freeware wordpad substitute that has more convenient things built into it such as spellchecker and the ability to change defaults at will and keep them. The windowsbbs archives must have recommendations, for such, from those that use and like them. There's got to be hundreds of these buggers out there. Just something to consider.
