    Can I change the default e-mail program in Navigator 7.02? I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't find the information and this seems like a friendly place. I am using Pegasus and do not wish to change to Netscape mail, but I cannot find anywhere to change the default e-mail program so that when I click on an e-mail link in a web page it will open Pegasus (or anything but Netscape mail).

    I have no trouble with IE, but really don't want to have to go to IE on my home computer (I have no choice at work).

    Thanks,
    HA.KS

    Welcome to the Forum, HA.KS!

    Hi HA.KS,

    We'll sure try to help you out with your problem.

    In Netscape:
    Edit|Preferences|Advanced|System
    Remove ALL ticks beside settings

    Close Netscape
    Browse to your:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourprofilename\*.slt
    (Depending on your OS)
    Back up the prefs.js file, then:

    Open the prefs.js file with Notepad
    Add this script:
    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);
    Save the file

    Go to:
    Start|Settings|Control Panel|Internet Options
    Click on the Programs Tab
    Is Pegasus listed as the Email Program?

    Let us know if any of the above helps you.

    Granny, my wife is laughing!

    I think she's greatly relieved. BTW, I'm a computer and science teacher in a small Kansas school. Thanks again.

    I need help with setting default email program. I prefer Eudora.

    I've gone through the steps outlined above and I still get Netscape mail popping up when I click on an email link in browser. :confused: What am I missing?

    Welcome to the Forum, smcb!

    Hi smcb,

    I haven't had a lot of success in helping users make Eudora their default Mail Program when using Netscape 7.02.

    I can give you some workarounds, which may, or may not help. You might also take a look at THIS THREAD:

    Eudora Release Notes

    Eudora now makes itself the handler for mailto: links in Netscape if any of the following conditions holds:
    - The registry entry for mailto [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command] points to Eudora.
    - The user answers Yes to the warning that pops up if Eudora is not configured as the default mailer.
    - If the settings DefaultMailto=1 and WarnDefaultMailto=0 are both present. By default, DefaultMailto is 0, meaning Eudora doesn't automatically make itself the default mailer, and WarnDefaultMailto is 1, meaning Eudora puts up the aforementioned warning if it's not the default mailer when it's launched.

    Set DefaultMailto=1 and WarnDefaultMailto=0 to make it open Eudora.

    Add the following to the [Settings] section of eudora.ini, if it is not already entered. You should be able to have Eudora open when clicking on a link:

    ForceDDEForHandlingMailto=1

    OR

    Open Windows Explorer
    Select View | Folder Options
    Click on the File Types tab
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
    Click on the Edit button
    Under Actions, highlight open
    Click on the Edit button
    Under Application used to perform action
    Browse to the e-mail program you want to use

    I'm sure you have disabled Netscape as your Default Mail Program:

    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups

    and set Eudora as the Default Email Program:

    Control Panel | Internet Properties | Programs

    That's the extent of my knowledge of workarounds. I hope either one, or all the above will help!

    Netscape 7.02 & Eudora - still puzzled

    using
    Windows 98SE
    Netscape 7.02
    Eudora 5.1

    1st of all
    Netscape disabled as default mail application (it says, oh yeah?)

    Eudora set as default mail program in
    Control Panel | Internet Properties | Programs

    checked
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command]
    points to Eudora

    Eudora.ini settings contains
    DefaultMailto=1
    WarnDefaultMailto=0
    ForceDDEForHandlingMailto=1

    Checked Windows Explorer
    Select View | Folder Options
    Click on the File Types tab
    Scroll down to URL:MailTo Protocol
    and it points to Eudora

    The registry entry
    (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command)
    is pointing to Eudora

    This line keeps disappearing from Windows/Application Data/Mozilla/Profiles/Default User/eit99pze.slt
    prefs.js
    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

    I put the line in, save file, go to browser and click on an email link, Netscape mail pops up, I frown, go back and check prefs.js and the line has disappeared!

    javascript:smilie(':confused:')
    confused

    The mailto links were working with Eudora - until I was messing with preferences in Netscape 7.01 idling changing ticking under mail section - with no intentions of actually using Netscape mail. Dang it. Even tho I've UNDONE everything that I ticked before - can't get back to previous settings.

    MAYBE! it worked

    Rebooted and tried it again and Eudora came up at click of the mailto link this time.

    The line in prefs.js is still there.
    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);

    :)

    Hi smcb,

    Hurray! The reason the script didn't stick in your prefs.js the first edit, could be because you did the editing with Netscape running? I failed to tell you to close Netscape before editing the prefs.js file. I should also have said to back up the prefs.js file first... :eek:

    The script should be adequate to make Eudora the default Mail program, as all other settings are correct. It works for some users, but not for others.

    Let us know if you have more problems.

    I have the same issue but when I try to go to the aforementioned directory I find that I have both a "default" and "Default User" folder. Which one do I need to modify and is the character string the same if I want to use Outlook Express as my default mail application. Thanks for the help, this has been driving me nuts for a while.

    Hi John,

    You want to make IE/OE your Default Browser and Mail Program? That can be done through the Control Panel. But first:

    Open Netscape:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System
    Remove all ticks

    Close Netscape:
    Open Notepad | File | Open
    Browse to:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    (depending on your OS)

    Back up your prefs.js file
    Once this is done, open the prefs.js file (using Notepad)
    Copy this line, and paste it into the prefs.js file, making it the last entry:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);
    Save the file, close Notepad.

    Next, go to:
    Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the Programs Tab
    Is Outlook Express entered in the Email Location?
    Insert a tick beside: "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the Default Browser "
    Open I.E. and answer YES when it asks if it is to be the default.

    Hopefully, this should work.

    John,

    To make Outlook the system default:

    Close Netscape:
    Open Notepad | File | Open
    Browse to:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
    (depending on your OS)

    Back up your prefs.js file
    Once this is done, open the prefs.js file (using Notepad)
    Copy this line, and paste it into the prefs.js file, making it the last entry:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", true);
    Save the file, close Notepad.

    Next, go to:
    Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the Programs Tab
    Outlook Express should be entered in the Email Location.

    Hi Ramona,
    Tried all the above and still get the same result. Netscape brings up the Netscape mail system even though I checked the field in control panel you suggested and it reads Outlook Express. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

    John,

    Did you take a look in your Profiles folder to determine which of the Profiles you are using, default or Default? In which Profile folder did you edit the prefs.js?

    I don't have more tricks in my bag for the OE/Netscape battle over email. The addition to the prefs.js file should make it work, but it doesn't always, as you can see if you've done any searches in the Forum.

    Ramona,
    Thought I'd clarify my previous post. When I'm in Netscape and I click on a e-mail link in the body of a web page the system does bring up Outlet Express now but when I go to File Send Page or Send Link it still brings up the Netscape mailer. Any ideas? Thanks for the previous help.

    Hi John,

    The "MailTo" script that you added to the prefs.js file should have corrected what you are describing.

    With Netscape closed:
    Check in Windows Explorer | View | Folder Option | File Types
    URL: MailTo Protocol

    Is IE the "Opens With" Application listed?
