    My computer died.
I am able to boot to safe mode.

Would I be better off to buy a retail Windows 8.1 and start over?

If you can boot to Safe Mode then the computer is not dead.
Tell us what happened just before "it died ", what symptoms it had of illness, etc, what you were doing with it.

Several times I have booted and the automatic repair function came up. it said we will attempt to repair your computer. After checking, it said we cannot repair this problem. In the details, it said bad driver but didn't say which driver.

    subsequent boots gave a BSOD with 0x0000007b (0xfffff880009a97e8, 0xffffffffc0000034,0x with 16 0s

If you can boot to safe mode, try to uninstall one driver at a time and then check.

I would also strongly urge you to check RAM & hard disk for errors.

I checked the hard drive with Western Digital disk for SATA drive. No problems found.

I bought a full version Windows 8.1 and installed. Works good now.
