Just opened up an XPPro computer (Asus P5PE-VM motherboard) and discovered that it has one 512m stick of PC3200 and one 512m stick of PC2100.

If anyone had asked me if this would work, I'd have said 'Probably not'. But it does work: in fact the computer runs very well.

    My questions:
    1) Is it likely that the PC3200 stick has been throttled back to PC2100?
    2) Anyone know of a benchmark\diagnostic app that would reveal this?

    Thanks :)

Not only likely, it's a certainty.

See this small explanation from Crucial...

Can I mix and match memory speeds?

Well..SIW is a fairly basic and dated diagnostic program and it's certainly not capable of providing an answer to my question.

And I have eight PCs running different systems;which one do you suggest I "complete my system details" for?

It supplied all the information I needed for this 3 month old laptop  and it would have confirmed what memory you had before you opened your computer :p

If you use several then don't bother but expect to post specs when requested. If you mainly use one system then post those specs.

So you're saying that SIW would have revealed that the PC3200 stick had been throttled back to match the PC2100?

Which was my original question. I didn't ask how to check the ram quantity or speed; I can use apps like PCMark, Passmark, Dacris, SiSoftSandra and FreshDiagnose to do that. And all without 'opening my computer'.

But as far as I'm aware, none of these diagnostic progs are capable of providing an answer to my query.

However, it seems that you might know differently.

    masonite,

No what I'm saying is SIW would have told you the type of memory (without "Just opened up... ") installed and to be blunt an experienced user would have known the PC3200 would be throttled down.
