Went to the DaneElec site and found a driver pkg for W98SE, D/l and installed, restarted and the (censored) drive is still not being recognized.

Any hints on what to do from here?

Trying to pull data off the W98SE box to install onto a new HP Vista box I just bought.

Better way to do it? (I have a 10' male/male usb cord)

    ......................

OK Went to the Dane site again and re-read the instructions, which are:

Remove ALL USB drives and restart computer..... (did that)

Install USB suite of drivers (incidentally, they're TOSHIBA drivers, so one imagines that eh 2GB thumb is basically a Toshiba product...) [did that]

Restart Computer (again), then insert USB drive.

    "Ennnnh! Wrong answer, Hans!"

    Nothing. Nada. Zip.

Look for updates for the motherboard/chipset drivers at the motherboard/system manufacturer's website, those should include USB controller drivers, otherwise check for separate USB controller drivers.

Try going to Control Panel -> Add New Hardware and run the wizard. See if you can find an INF (.inf) file in the driver download, right-click on it and select Install. When you run the Add New Hardware wizard again, use "I will select the drivers from a list ". You should find the manufacturer (Toshiba?) and model in the list.

Check your USB controller drivers are up to date and try running the Add New Hardware Wizard.

Try formatting it on the Vista system.

    Mattman:

Tried looking for drivers /BIOS updates etc at the MoBo website...this one is so old (1999) it doesn't even have legacy updates showing anywhere. It apears to be a Supermicro 370SED or PIII SED but neither have any updates listed at the Supermicro website.

The two driverpacks I d/l from the Dane site have no .INF in the pkg (after extraction): but do have a "setup.inx" file. Dunno if that does me any good, but trying to install them on their own (using the setup.exe file) produced no results..drive still not recognized.

Of course, Install New Hardware wizard wants an "inf" file, so I'm aground there unless I change the file extension... probably NOT a smart idea.

Don;t have the Vista box running yet as I wanted to first transfer over the Antivirus, Hijack, Anti-malware and Firewall programs I've d/l specifically for the new box.

I'll not be using Vista on it, though... the box comes with a "dumb-down" disc to install XP-Pro over the installed Vista system (which has me nervous as a cat, I gotta tell you) and I want to use that instead. All this bumf is so I can get the box protected BEFORE i actually go online and let it "out in the world ", so to speak.

    Your help is MUCH appreciated!

As well as Matt's advice have you considered networking or as this is (i assume) a one time only transfer an FTP server/client transfer?
