    Hi :)

I'm running IE5.5 SP2 on Windows 98 and have had a problem for several months now where Outlook Express takes from 45-70 seconds to open up. Then when open, the Address Book and New Message take around 45 seconds to open as well.

Also, while it is taking its time to open I hear program opening and closing chimes happening in the background. The number of opening/closing chimes seem to vary.

Under System Information, I have found 4 CAB files in the Internet Explorer\Cache\List of Objects marked as 'Damaged'. They are:

    ChatSpace Java Client 2.1.0.88
    ChatSpace Java Client 2.1.0.88L
    ChatSpace Java Client 2.0.0.66
    ChatSpace Java Client 2.0.0.89

Everything else in this directory is marked as Installed. Could this be causing my problem, anyone, please:D

    TIA

Use the Internet Explorer Repair Tool:

    1. Start\Run\MSINFO32 & hit enter button.
    2. From the Tools Menu choose IE Repair

OE & IE are tightly integrated and files they sahre that are damaged will get repaired.

Next, the probable cause of slowness in OE is due to your mail folders being large or possibly corrupted somewhat. Compacting the folders will speed up OE greatly:

    1. Open OE
    2. File Menu\Folders\Compact All Folders

  3. to hide this advert.

I think I've dabbled in the IE repair area recently to see if it would fix my problem with the damaged files (If I did - it didn't). I'll go there again and try the compact thing as well, although I would not consider my IE folders as being large.

However, I'll give your tips a go and see what transpires.

    Thanks:)

I firstly deleted the 4 damaged ChatSpace files from 'List of Objects' directory (and strangely enough could not find them in the Recycle Bin - so don't know where they went).

Then I did the IE Repair. All went ok and I suppose because those damaged files did not reappear, they can not be related to the functioning of IE or OE.

I did the compact all files which has caused my OE to open totally in 40 seconds instead of 70-odd. I then deleted all the folders in OE to see if it got even faster - but it still opens in 40 seconds (20 seconds to the first OE window, 10 seconds to the next window which shows all the folders etc and 10 seconds to finish loading the tool bar icons, i.e. Address Book, Send/Receive, Recipients etc).

I'm sure this is not normal as I remember OE opening as quickly as several seconds before all this business started happening!

Can anyone explain what is actually happening when the opening/closing chimes sound during the OE load please.

Also, has downloading IE 5.5 over IE 4 caused any known problems as this may have been done by the service guys. If the overloading was done - how could I tell on my system. I have seen references to IE 4 in some file paths but this might be normal.

    Thanks for your help people:)

I'm interested in this Repair IE tool but it doesn't appear when run MSINFO32 and open the tools menu in my OS Win 98SE. I called my dealer/technician and he said there isn't such a repair tool. If I find one, let him know.

    What gives please?

    baz,

I don't use IE or OE that often since Netscape is my main browser/email program but I would try the following in IE Tools, Internet Options, to see if it helps:

    Under Temporary Internet Files,
-click the Delete Files button and check the Offline Content.

As far as the List of Objects marked as 'Damaged', I remembered something similar I saw in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files so I looked through my notes and saw that it is normal at least for the Java Runtime Environment 1.3.1 object to appear as "damaged" (that's the Sun Java plugin, which I installed to use with Netscape 4.78) and may also apply to other "damaged" objects.

I looked for ChatSpace Java Client on http://groups.google.com and it appears to be a java applet for website chat rooms. If you need it again it will be redownloaded when you try accessing a chatroom that uses it.

    As far as your question,
Not sure what you mean by "overloading" but you normally would install newer versions of IE over the existing version. I also see IE4 in various filenames and folders even though IE4 has never been installed on my system.

I installed IE5.5 over IE3.02 from a CD-Rom but I have also downloaded and installed IE5.5Sp2 online for someone who had Win98/IE4 and there were no problems.

    Thanks Tony T

I regret that I did not make my interest more clear [I did so I believe re another message post
and wasn't thinking.] I'm running Win 98SE and IE 6.00.2712.300 which I don't believe is correctly or fully installed. I've looked at the MS help doc you post but it doesn't apply to Ver 6.

My interest is more in asking why there's no repair tool in the System Utility menu.

    My apologies.

    I appreciate your help people:)

Welt - I don't have a so called "System Utility Menu" and I'm not sure if you are clear on the IE Repair Tool thing or not.

If you typed MSINFO32 in the Run command (a shortcut for Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information) and didn't get the Microsoft System Information window where you could find 'Internet Explorer Repair Tool' under the Tools menu - then you 'aint got it I guess.

Alice - Thanks for the tips on the ChatSpace files - that should be o.k. as you say when the chat line is next opened. As far as the "overloading" - yes, I meant when I installed an updated version over the top. Anyway the reference to IE4 in other files seems to be normal from what you say.

Also, I deleted Offline Content as suggested and cranked it up. Would you believe it took 50 seconds to bring up the OE5 banner, then 15 seconds to open the OE window and another 10 seconds to finish loading that window. Hmmmmmmm!

This problem might be fixed when I finally do a complete reinstall of windows etc, cause I have a major ScanDisk and Defrag hanging problem as well that I'm trying to sort out.

    Thanks again to all:D

You could try a newsgroup search at http://groups.google.com and see what you come up with. I tried searching on Outlook Express slow opening mvp and came up with lots of posts. Here's one:

    From: Tom C. Koch (tkoch@mvps.org)
Subject: Re: Slow opening Outlook express 5
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress

There are several things that can make OE very slow to start. Try these suggestions one at a time. Note about extracting files: if you have Win98, click Start|Run and type without quotes "sfc ", then use the Extract button.

    1) Restore the file "Imagehlp.dll" in your Windows/System directory.
    extract win98_32.cab /a [filename]
(on some systems, it is found in win98_26.cab)
(for IE5 users on Win95/NT, it is found in setup295.cab)

    2) Try replacing the following 4 files in \windows\system:
    psbase.dll, pstorec.dll, pstorerc.dll and pstores.exe.

To do so, first close Outlook Express and any IE windows. Next, copy the 4 files to a temporary folder so that you can restore them if
needed. Now find the Windows Update Setup Files directory which contains the CAB files for IE5. Extract the 4 files using the following command:
    extract ie_s1.cab /a [filename]
(on some systems, it is found in ie_s4.cab)

When all 4 are extracted, copy them to the \windows\system directory, choosing to overwrite the existing files if you are prompted. Then reboot the computer.

    3) Compact your OE files by clicking File|Folder|Compact All Folders.
If that doesn't help, close Outlook Express and rename or delete the file "folders.dbx ". Close first. By deleting this file, OE5 will rescan your Store Root folder to create a new index of all messages, folders and subscribed newsgroups. It will destroy all nesting of mail folders (hierarchy), as well as remove all lists of newsgroups on all news accounts. Your subscribed newsgroups will remain, however you will have to reconfigure their synchronization settings.

FYI, #1 is associated with installing McAfee anti-virus after installing OE. The McAfee install deletes the Imagehlp file by mistake. If you restart the computer after uninstalling an older McAfee and before installing an update, the problem does not occur.

#2 can occur if a program was running in the background at the time that you installed OE5. Anti-virus apps are the most common ones to be
running. That prevents system files from being updated by the install.

#3 helps for those who upgraded over an existing OE4, and especially if the OE4 folders had not been compacted before the upgrade.

Addendum to point 3. After you delete folders.dbx you will have to reload the newgroup list next time you want subscribe to a new newsgroup. I then delete folders.dbx again or it runs slow.

    Thanks Baz.

Oh I get the MS Systems Information Window OK...there's just no IE Repair Tool. Perhaps it went south when I did the upgrade to Ver 6.

Hi All:) - I've decided that because of system problems in my computer (not sure exactly what - some form of corruption) I will be taking it to a Tech and having serious surgery done.

This will include a clean reinstall of IE which should fix my problem. If it doesn't - I'll be back;)

So... I say thanks to all respondants for their time and suggestions which will go on file for future reference (heaven forbid - should I need it):D

    PROBLEM SOLVED

    :D Hi all -

A Norton Antivirus 2002 scan found that my system was riddled with the W95.CIH virus. According to the tech report all my program files (.exe and .com) were infected.

My system has been repartitioned, reformatted and reinstalled with W98, which has cured all my software problems.

I have since purchased the above mentioned AV program and have it installed.

Now, the only ChatSpace Java Client I have in my 'List of Objects' is 'ChatSpace Java Client 2.1.0.91' which is said to be 'Installed', i.e., no mention of anything 'Damaged'.

So... I'm a happy camper again.

Thanks to all for your time and help in trying to sort this out:D
