    Hi,

My recently fully reinstalled updated PC running XP does restart by itself every night around midnight.
I found an event in application log right before the restart:

    Event Source: ESENT
    Event Category: Online Defragmentation
    Event ID: 701
    Date: 19.09.2008

I found another event in security event right before every restart:

    Computer: [myPCname]

    Logon Process Name: KSecDD

Any ideas, how to find out the reason for the restarts?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)
Are you doing some sort of On-Line Defrag? If so, what time is it set to?

Have you looked in Scheduled Tasks to see if there's a reboot comand listed there?
