just bought and connected PC to a D-link D1-604 router

once you reboot PC, (which i do often)found it a hassle to reconnect-finally got it back online by shutting down & rebooting DSL modem, then router

manual doesnt say anything about re-connecting,once you see it has been assigned an IP address ,your connected-you have no window that shows you if connected, speed etc

is there any utility window that shows you if connected, speed ?

    ???????

I have not ever had that kind of a proplem with either a Linksys or my new DI-704UP Router.

Just plugged then in and go.

Are cables plugged into the proper places ?

right-click Network Neighborhood or My Network Places or whatever your desktop network icon is called and left-click on Properties.

right-click on your network connection and left-click Properties.

Check the box titled "Show icon in notification area when connected" or similar that should be on the main window that shows all your network information (QoS, TCP/IP, etc.).

But the connection issue when you reboot is not normal. I'd check for a firmware update for your router and apply it if you find one (probably will). I'd also go into the settings for your network card and change the speed/duplexing from Auto to 100Mbps Full-Duplex if the card offers those choices. Depending on the card, they may be combined into one setting or they may be separate.

Router updates are Here for yours.

With a router in between, the DSL modem should not be able to cause this since the PC takes it's information from the router and should get the proper values assigned regardless of the modem being on, off, or removed completly.

If you do the firmware and speed changes and continue to have problems then please post your IP configuration information here while the PC has failed to connect. If you say what OS you run, we can give specifics on getting the information.
