    Hi All,

A friend gave me his WindowsXP Home IBM computer to see if I could get it working. His problems started when he installed SP2. First he gave it to another friend who formatted the hard drive and then gave up on a repair. The reason I'm posting to the Windows 98 forum is that I can't get W98 to perform prior to using his WindowsXP Home upgrade.

The program appears to run fine in Safe Mode but what happens in the Normal mode is that the IBM splash screen is immediately followed by the W98 screen and occasionally by a small Personal Setting screen. These screens keep cycling until I shut the power off. This brings up a scan disk the next turn-on time. Another thing of note is that I don't see the A: drive being checked during turn-on. Does anyone have some words of wisdom that at least gets 98 working?

You don't need WIN98 to work to install the WIN XP upgrade. The way I did my home computer was to format the hard drive, changed my boot sequence to boot to the CD-Rom first and started the installation. It comes to a point where it will ask for proof that you owned WIN 98 or WIN ME. When this comes up you just put the WIN 98 CD in the CD-Rom drive, you'll then be request to put the WIN XP CD back in and the installation continues on it's merry way.

    Kevin,

Thank you for your response. The reason for my delay in responding is that I kept trying to load various programs with no success. Even when I used the IBM Product Recovery CDs, the same problem persisted. My friend is going to pick the unit up today and make a decision on his next move. Again, thank you for your interest.
