From task manager of my win2k pro, I counted 36 running processes. Is there a chance to eliminate some processes that may not be needed?

That is true of checking what the services do.
There is a lot of overlap with Windows XP as Windows 2000 is the precursor of XP.
Remember at the worst you can start the computer- run services.msc and turn on all services to get back to default values.
Here is a link for XP services that you can turn off ( or at least in the author's case and situation). Depends on what your needs are obviously.

generally with 2000 I turn off the following services with no grief:

    1) Messenger - this is an service that allows for those pop up ads.
the 2000 service pack and xp sp1 turns it off
    2) Indexing . The phrase I heard is that if you need indexing then you may as well need a new computer ( or something like that)
    3) Uninterrupted power supply
    4) fax
    5) remote registry access
    6) some people turn off print spooler. May cause trouble with setting up a printer at some point
    7) If you are not using a wireless card of sorts the wireless configuration

remember at the worst you can always turn on all the services and start over again.
