    Hello all!

I have a Ghost Image which passed the Integrity Check before defragmenting (Norton SpeedDisk) the partition but not afterwards.

I posted the complete Integrity Check Report to Symantec and they condensed the message to this:

When I try to copy the files (four spans to fit on CDs) to another partition, I get the following error message (with reservation for my translation from swedish to english):

"Unable to copy 03030003. Data error (CRC-error, Cyclic Redundancy Check) "

03030003 refers to the file being copied when the error occurs, 03030003.ghs

Symantec suggests that I should get Diskeeper to do a boot-time MFT defragmentation which possibly will cure the problem.

Does anyone have an opinion on what went wrong?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Edited:

I have gone Google on "Error Number: (8027) ", "Error 0x40" and "CRC-error" but it was too technical for me so, please, be gentle ...... :) ......

    Another hint:

In Windows Explorer, when I right-click on the partitions and choose Tools > "Check this drive for errors" then the check will run on C: and D: but not on E: where I store my Ghost Images.

    Another question:

    Does checkdisk create a logfile?
I have tried to find one but to no avail.

    Whew!!! :D

I can help with a couple of these.

The defrag applet that ships with XP is a dumbed down version of Diskeeper. It does defrag the MFT thanks to a couple of tweaks to the XP file system that allows this. However, it does not and cannot defrag your pagefile and the other registry hives at boot time and that also needs to be done. You can either buy a copy of Diskeeper (faster and lots more features) or you can get a free copy of PageDefrag from sysinternals.com that does a fine job of this. That's the option I used since I usually start a normal defrag when I plan to be away from the PC for a while and speed isn't an issue.

Chkdsk calls autochk.exe and from Description of Enhanced Chkdsk, Autochk, and Chkntfs Tools in Windows 2000 (and it's the same for XP)

    Hi Newt,
    thanks for Your response!

Well, I´ll have to blame the time difference - I´ve been up for hours, asking questions, when You guys get out of bed ...... ;) ......

I assume that this refers to Diskeeper and not the "XP dumbed down version ", right?

According to Norton SpeedDisk, my pagefile is in one contiguous chunk. Can it still be fragmented?

Norton WinDoctor checks the registry and I believe that it optimizes the registry too but that´s possibly/probably not the same as defragmenting.

I´ll have to read up on chkdsk tomorrow - it´s middle of the night here. I´m sure that it will raise a few more questions, though.

    Regards,
    Christer

    To the moderator:

I didn´t know if this thread should go in "Hardware" or "General Discussions" but I chose "General Discussions" since it was a combination of hardware and Norton Ghost and we are not allowed to double post.

Don´t You think that moving it to "Other Software" will effectively hide the original question from the people who know about hardware?

    ...... :) ...... Christer ...... :) ......

    Hi Christer

This is a rather grey area covering both software and hardware.

As you seem concerned I'm moving this to Hardware and leaving a redirect in Other Software.

    Thanks PeteC!

I hope that someone will be able to tell me what happened and I believe the chances are bigger here.

I´ve read up on chkdsk on the page to which Newt provided a link. From one of my previous posts:

I have run chkdsk from the cmd-prompt and it went well on C: and D:.

On E: I had to add the switch /F and after that had the message that the volume was locked in use and if I wanted to force an unlock - I chose "yes ".

Chkdsk did its thing and corrected the filesystem (code 46?) and found no other errors.

After rebooting I rerun chkdsk from the cmd-prompt and it ran on all three partitions.

However, the actual span of the Ghost Image still neither passes the Integrity Check (which I didn´t expect) nor does it copy from E: to D: (which I did expect with a corrected file system).

The good Ghost Image copied from E: to D: so I guess that I´ll have to reformat E: and put the good one back when done.
