if space was being misreported in win98 could this be the cause
of windows crashing as I have ruled out hdd failure I have checked by running power max but did find space errors with scandisk, just wondered if this may well be the root cause and if anyone had knowledge on this.

    Regards

Depends on what you mean by "windows crashing. "

    How often does it happen?
    Any error messages?
    When did it start?

Where are you seeing the dirve size thingie? If it's the Pie chart, that's a known bug that does no harm.

This is a common occurence with Win98, FAT32 file system and with windows crashing, forcing a reset.
Scandisk fixes these on reboot, so they are not causing problems when running. The crash causes the "misreported free space ".
If you could post the "various error messages" you will get some help on this.
