one of my machines is a clone -- Win 7 with a ASUS M2N68-AM PLUS.

I love the machine but it has a slow CPU in it, an AMD Athlon 5200 dual core running at 2.3 gig which I find incredibly semi slow. Now, I know this puppy is 3 years old and it appears the way technology advances I can't find a faster CPU for it.. Looking at the downloads for the motherboard at the asus site, it has bios flashes that describe them for supporting new CPUs. The problem is, there is a URL that is suppose to list the new CPUs but of course the URL is bad. anybody know how I can get a faster, preferably a 2.8 gig cpu for this machine or how does that work? Am I making sense?

thanks (here is the asus link

Going from 2.3 to 2.8G is not a heck of a lot of improvement. The 2.3 should not be a slouch. I would be happier with a bigger margin and also look at L2 cache. I would not swap an i7 for a Celeron, or a Phenom for a Sempron.

Is the upgraded CPU available? Have you priced it?

After a 3 year (odd) period I thought about upgrading my CPU and a new one was not readily available. I considered the time and effort to find one and install it... then, as usual, I looked at reducing the load on the CPU. I asked myself what is running, why doesn't the system run like the day it was first started it up? A reformat always does wonders, especially if you can remember "repairs" that might have not been completely successful in the past.

Not an answer to your question...but the system as it was built was probably a "screamer ":) Consider that the motherboard will not be upgraded at the same time, it might have a HUGE processor to cope with?? The m/b chipset copes with everything going in and out of the CPU. Does the Northbridge chip have a fan of it's own?

This is the opposite side of the coin. Consider it. I hope you get some suggestions specifically for your question.

    Matt

According to this link for the mobo:
    http://in.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2Plus/M2N68AM_PLUS/#specifications

It will use any of these cpus:
    AMD AM3/AM2+/AM2 ;Phenom™II /Athlon™II /Phenom™ / Athlon™ /Sempron™ Processors
    AMD Cool 'n' Quiet™ Technology
AMD 64 architecture enables simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing
*Due to the chipset limitation, the AM3/AM2+ CPU runs at HT1 (1000MHz).

    I think your 5200 is an Athlon™II..

Hi elcajongunsfan. Based on the CPU support list for your motherboard you can install a AMD Phenom II X6 1045T.

I have the same CPU on my system and it is very fast when launching applications and using Windows 7.

Going from your Athlon 64 X2 5200+ to the Phenom II X6 1045T will be a massive improvement in performance. Hopefully spending $100 dollars for a CPU upgrade works for you. If the CPU is to expensive then let me know and I will help you find one that is cheaper.

What socket is the CPU running in? Is it socket AM2 or the socket AM3 version? If the Athlon 64 X2 5200+ is the AM2 version then you will have to update your motherboards BIOS before you can install the AMD Phenom II X6 1045T CPU.

Thanks for replies all.. I'm not much of a CPU person, my world is networks. The socket is the AM2/AM2+ and the CPU is a regular Athlon. I looked for other CPUs but found out they aren't available anymore (out of date) thus my comment about technology moving too fast..The Sempron was a good candidate but availability was used not new. And so my question about flashing the bios to find a newer CPU was borne

    Thanks all

Ok, so will you be buying the AMD Phenom II X6 1045T CPU or will you be going with something that is a bit cheaper?

If this fit's in my AM socket Id buy it.. Jsut looked at the specs and it sez it's a 3.4 gigger--pretty fast.. I'd be happy with a 2.5-2.8.. Kinda hoping there is an expert reseller that can say "For your ASUS I can sell you this "

    regards

That CPU does fit in your motherboard and is compatible. You just have to look on the CPU support list for your motherboard which I linked you to in my first post.

This is not possible due to the amount of different motherboards that are available. If you follow the motherboards CPU support list information then thats all you need to go by to determine what CPU your motherboard supports.

now i',m lost.. I looked up that specific CPU you suggested and it says at TigerDirect that it goes in a AM3 socket. I have the AM2/AM socket. Are you saying they are the same?

    Thanks

The socket AM2/AM2+/AM3 sockets are different but your motherboard does support AM3 socket CPU's. While the motherboard does work with AM3 socket CPU's just note that the AM3 socket CPU will run at a slower speed due to the chipset limitation of the motherboard.
