I started a similiar thread in hardware, but after looking around I think this problem has something to do with IExplorer and the lastest security patch I installed Saturday.

My CPU usage used to be around 5 to 10% when I wasn't doing anything, but now it's 100% all the time. (even in safemode)

And my CPU is running hot at 55 degrees, should be around 46. Would doing a registry restore help?

    I have Win98SE...thanks

For a starter why not find out what process is hogging the cpu resources?

Recommedation: obtain the process viewer "TaskInfo2000 ",
    from http://www.iarsn.com
Free to evaluate, USD $20 to register.

What was this update you suspect is causing the problem?

Thanks, here's a screenshot of Taskinfo. Maybe you can make heads or tails out of it.

BTW...if those concerned can't get the screenshots, it's because it's that time of week (Sunday Nights) for RR to do maintenance.

You might have to check back tomorrow...

This is the update that I suspect: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)

I have this topic going in the hardware section, also. Wasn't sure what was causing the problem. Maybe this belongs in the Win98 section...some kind of bug?

Anyway, I downloaded a program that shows processes, and this is what shows for about 3 seconds, and then it goes away and shows normal cpu usage.

I wonder if this is why "System Monitor" is always peaked at 100%? Maybe it's only seeing that first 3 seconds.
