Hi folks, new to this site, no sure if i'm posting in the right place. Anyway, here goes. I have XP home edition on my laptop, about 2 weeks ago my laptop started having probs, the cpu usage kept shooting up to 100%. I figured it was some kind of virus and wiped the whole laptop (yes, i actually wiped it, not just created a new partition), and all seemed fine.

Last night, exactly the same thing started happening, when i turn the laptop on it takes ages to boot, the windows tune that plays on startup sounds all dodgy (no, it's not the speakers) and the cpu usage is a pain. When i booted up today the first thing i did was open task manager and check the cpu usage, it was at 100% without me even doing anything. It eventually went down to less than 10%, but if i open up explorer it shoots back up to 100% again. In task manager i prioritised the processes by CPU, and for some reason Sytem Idle Process was flickering between 98-99.

    Can anyone help?

It could be something as simple as Windows Updates downloading the recent updates....

Absolutely fine - System Idle is just that - the proportion of the CPU which is not being used.
Which processes are using up the CPU at that time?

Sorry it's taken a while to respond, my internet is going extremely slow, another by product of my problem. Okay, i noted down which processes were doing what when i turned my laptop on, here they are...

    svchost.exe 23,160 K

    CCAPP.exe 16,172 K

    yop.exe 18,968 K

    explorer.exe 16,180 K

    LUCOMS~1.exe 11,448 K

everything else is under 10,000 K

These were the worst ones, there were 56 processes in total. Bear in mind that all i had done here is turn my laptop on and opened task manager, so i don't get why things like explorer exe were running.

"there were 56 processes in total "

That's a pretty large number...I have 36 running...The following will help you look each one up and help decied which ones you can stop..

CPU % would be far more useful than the memory allocated to each process, but I note from what you have posted that you are running two antivirus programs ......

    ypo.exe .....
    CCAPP.exe ....
Running two antivirus programs is strictly not recommended due to likely conflicts - I suggest you disable/uninstall the Yahoo! Online Protection software and see how things are then.

AFAIK explorer.exe is loaded at startup regardless of whether or not Windows Explorer is open - I would need to check.

that's the thing, i'm not running two programs, i had to get rid of everything else to install norton protection centre, with came with bt total broadband, and since i did that i wiped my computer then reinstalled norton, so there shouldnt even be any traces of another anti virus prog.

Running Processes says otherwise :) Maybe part of the BT package.

Download CodeStuff Starter and go to the Startups tab and disable yop.exe - if it is there.

    I repeat ....
Loaded processes are only running when the value in the CPU column in Task Manager > 00

is YOP.exe the same thing as YPO.exe? I don't have a process named YPO.exe. Do you think it could be Norton? I have heard about folk having problems with that.

Lol, no probs, i ended up wiping the laptop again, it was getting worse. When i reinstalled everything i kept norton off it and put on avast, comodo, and spybot, just have to wait and see if the problem stays away this time. Having probs getting it connected to the internet now but that's a whole diff kettle of fish lol. Maybe some day some one will invent a computer that actually works the way it is meant to!
