Greetings! I hope you can help with this problem. Recently, I installed a CPU / MB upgrade:

    CPU: Athlon XP 1800+
    MB: ASUS A7V133
    512 MB SDRAM PC133
    Windows 98 SE

All went well, installation-wise. Now that I am fine-tuning, I am getting the following problems. First of all, I read and re-read the manual. Then, after the install, I updated the BIOS to the most recent version. I also updated the VIA 4-in-1 drivers to the most recent. Now, the CPU is shown in the BIOS, but instead of 1530MHZ, it shows as 1150MHZ. I have done everything that the manual says to do "“ no luck. In fact, after setting the FSB to 133HZ, and the multiplier to 11.5 (the proper settings), all that happens is that the computer will keep getting one of a few different error messages:

    (1)Fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0028:C0006769 in VXD(01) + 00005769
    (2)Fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0003FC6
(3)While initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows protection error.

At first I thought there was an over-heating problem, this was not the case.

    CPU: 59C
    MB: 31C
(the HSF I am using: ThermalTake Volcano 6CU+)(AMD approved)

Although these temps are high, they are still within specs. Any other settings will yield the same error messages. I then return the BIOS to the default settings, and all is OK. I have changed out the RAM modules with known good sticks and I get identical results. I am at the end of my rope. With the default settings in place, the computer performs very well. I'm beginning to think that this CPU was meant to run only on a MB that supports DDR SDRAM. AMD and ASUS both say otherwise. I have been told that all I have to do is :" set FSB to 133, SDRAM to 133, multiplier to 11.5, Vcore to 1.50, and all will be fineâ€. Well, it isn't.
I guess I am destined to have less than I paid for, unless there is some magical group of BIOS settings I have not tried. Can you please help me? I would greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thank you for listening,

According the the ASUS website the A7V133 MoBo does not support Athlon XP chips.
    A7v133

The max it supports is a 1.3 Ghz THUNDERBIRD or DURON processor.

Thank you, Hex92. You're absolutely correct. However, ASUS has released an updated BIOS(1007), which supposedly adds support
for the AthlonXP. I downloaded and flashed the BIOS, and it does at least recognize the XP1800+; but when I try different settings to get the performance it was designed for - no luck! ASUS has not yet answered any of my e-mails, they put me on hold over the telephone, etc. I just keep trying. If you, or anyone else, has any advice, I would be most appreciative,

    Hi paladin,
Just took a look at alt.comp.perphs.mainboard.asus did see one post concerning A7V133 v1.04 that speaks to a clock generator problem associated with XP's. What revision number is your board?

Thanks for the input, Tinknocker. After pausing the boot-up to try to find out, it seems to me that the version is either: 1.04 or 1.0A. It goes too quick for my aging eyes. Anyway, I'd say that my MB is one of the "bad" ones.:( I want to thank you for the info, even though I'm not too pleased to hear it. If you have time, could you post the URL? I'd like to use it in my correspondence with ASUS, etc. Thanks again,
