Broni ruled out malware as the cause, but I went the nuclear route and did a factory recovery after the machine refused to boot into Windows of late, or safe mode, but the CPU issue remains.

I don't know what to make of this, but it appears that windows update is hogging cpu cycles. I tried deleting the software distribution folder on C drive, but the cpu is still maxed out. Physical memory doesn't seem to be a problem, although 50% stays in use while the cpu is maxed out.

This is a Toshiba Satellite C655 with Windows 7 Home Premium and a single-core Celeron processor with 3 GB of RAM.

I honestly don't know what to make of this. My Dell quad-core desktop doesn't have this problem, and it has the same operating system.

    C655-S5132

The last part of the model number was smudged out, but fortunately, Toshiba found it via a serial number search.

All reviews on Toshiba single core running W7 Prem 64bit say it is extremely slow. More RAM may be the answer but it's quoted as an entry level laptop in Toshiba range and the Celeron single core CPU will be the stumbling block. Neil.

Hi James. You can try following the steps in my Optimize Windows 7 guide and see if those steps will improve performance but there is only so much software tweaks can do to improve performance when the CPU is only a single core running at 2.2 GHz.

If this was my system, I would have gotten rid of that laptop long ago as I wouldn't waste time trying to improve the performance of a single core system.

Got to agree on the single core. Ain't much there to work with.

I was looking at that recently, but it will take a while to digest it all.

I agree with single-core issue. My brother let me use the laptop after the someone damaged the screen. I connected it to an old CRT, and have been using it as a secondary unit for minor stuff like reading emails, playing music, web browsing, etc. Not sure what happened to cause the CPU issue though, but I've seen a few other posts about similar issues concerning Windows 7.

I've encountered Windows Update maxing out single core systems running Windows 7 so I think its just a hardware limitation that you will need to work with and improve performance as much as you can or cut your losses and get a better laptop.

I let Windows Update run for an hour or so, and after installing a few more security updates, the problem seems to have corrected itself for the time being.

Still holding my breath for now.

Looks like the PC makers would have at least installed a dual-core processor in these budget machines.

Yeah and that's why I never recommend these low end systems to clients because no matter how much you try and improve their performance, you will still end up with a sub par computing experience.

I may try something like Zorin on it one day.

Yeah. You get what you pay for. Can't turn a jackass into a race horse. :D
