I recently dumped MSAS in favour of CounterSpy as I found that MSAS was hogging the CPU and slowing down my m/c. I am well aware that they are both essentially the same animal based on the GIANT software.

The then current version of CounterSpy (!.27?) did much the same and their support acknowledged that this was a problem, but that it would be fixed in the new version, 1.5 released last week.

I am now running v1.5 and the situation is much worse with SunProtectionServer.exe taking 99% of the CPU most of the time and slowing the m/c so much that I have temporarily disabled CounterSpy.

While I am waiting for a reply from their (excellent response so far) Support team, are any of the other users of CounterSpy on the Board experiencing this?

For completeness XP Pro SP2, patched to the eyeballs running on Asus A8V Deluxe mobo, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ running Cool 'n Quiet with 2 Gb RAM on board.

Strange. Both my wife and I are running CS on separate computers (1.5) and neither of us are experiencing this.

    Update ....

The problem became so dire that I was forced to uninstall CounterSpy in order to continue using the computer. Simply shutting it down did not stop SunProtectionServer.exe from running and nor did stopping the process in Task Manager or elsewhere - it just restarted.

Thankfully the good people at Sunbelt responded promptly with a solution that, for the past few hours at least, has worked.

The solution is to shut down CounterSpy and open

    C:\documents and settings\your username\local settings\application data\sunbelt software\CounterSpy\SunProtectionData.sdb

in Notepad, delete all it contains and to save the now empty file.

On starting CounterSpy again the file is repopulated - and everything works as it should :)

    Hi Pete

Glad to hear you're all taken care of and up and running again. The support from
CounterSpy is really excellent. I've had them respond to me several times now and every time they were able to help me out. :)
