I have just installed W2K in a dual-boot setup with W98. After getting W2K running I then downloaded an anti-virus program within a few hours. I have an "always on" Internet connection. Surprise! My PC was already infected. I then rebooted into W98 and removed the virus from there. NAV said "there have been changes to the Master Boot record. Are you expecting this?" I answered "yes ", but obviously the virus had done its work -- not W2K and I cannot boot into anything other than W98 now.
How can I restore or repair the MBR? Or do I need to reload W98?
    David :(

    Master Boot Record

Thanks for citing this reference. It says though that fdisk usually updates the MBR if no MBR exists -- but I have one. It also says fdisk/mbr can also cause problems for some dual-boot programmes -- which I have.
Would fdisk/mbr reformat my hard disk?
Is there another way to restore my old MBR?
    David

    The info here may help.
I suspect this is more of a W2K problem and I am moving it there.

    Yup. What markp62 said.

You need an MBR structured so 2K understands it. Fixmbr should take care of you nicely.

    MBR corrrupted and restored

Thanks for this help. Luckily I had only just started with W2K and when I restored the MBR and the Partition table with my (two-monnth old) Norton Basic Rescue disk it started to behave. I recovered all my data from D: but lost everything on E: (where W2K was). Thanks for the advice -- I'll keep it by me in case Norton can't help in future.
    David :D
