A virus corrupted my user profile in XP. All the files and programs are still there, but many are shaded out. Programs and documents will all still open, but I can't make changes to some files within the programs. My favorites file is there but won't come up under favorites.

I have tried to copy the user profile to another one, but with no luck.

System restore somehow got turned off, so I can't restore to a previous version.

Is there any way to reinstall or repair the corrupt user profile?

Unfortunately there is no good way to repair a profile that is damaged.

About the best you can do is save the contents of the profile (well, save the the folders but ntuser.dat is probably the piece that is damaged so don't save it), create a new profile, and place the saved folder contents into it.

If you want to keep the same username as the bad profile, you will need to log on as the administrator, rename the bad profile, and then log on with the same username which will create a new account with the same display name but a different security ID so to people, it looks the same but to XP it looks completely different.
