i had to do a repair install on xp. After the reinstall it keeps telling me that there are some corrupt and unreadable explorer exe files and i keep getting a chkdsk after reboot and chkdsk reports that everything is normal. i tried to do another repair install and i can't get past the "setup is starting windows" screen. i either get a blue screen with error codes which i wrote down but have somehow lost, but i remember that one screen said unmountable boot volume or it just freezes and won't go any further. everything seems to be ok other than this problem and the fact that xp will not recognize my dvd-r drive which is configured as the master and is detected in the bios. it detects my slave drive dvd-r and that is it.i have a sata 2 wdc 250gb hard drive, amd xp2600 and an abit nf7s-2g motherboard. is the hard drive starting to die? please help

Boot to the Windows CD and when you see (at the bottom of the screen) "Press F6 to install drivers for SCSI controllers..." install the drivers the SATA controllers. The drivers will have been supplied on a floppy disk by the manufacturer of the motherboard (system) or you will be able to download them from their website. Sometimes there are several models of drivers, be sure to select the correct ones (check the system specifications for which model SATA controllers you have).

If my suspicion is right, once you have installed those you may be able to cancel out of the rest of the installation or you may need to reinstall Windows again.

The Lifeguard utilities from the WD website should tell you if there are any physical problems with the drive.

i did do that but i chose both the raid drivers and the storage controller drivers off of the floppy. i tried it again last night with just selecting the storage controller drivers and i got past the setup is starting windows screen and it checked my discs and said it did repairs and asked me to restart. so far so good. i'll know better this evening. thanks
