I have been trying to copy an AVI file from my C drive to my external USB Maxtor Hard drive. The file is 9.25 GB Long. Name is video 1.avi

All programs can access it from the C drive.

Properties tells me that the Maxtor drive has 22.5 GB available. I keep getting message that there is not enough disc space on the drive.

I have defragged it etc. I can copy many other files to the external drive with no difficulty. I also can copy this file from Drive C to Drive C with no difficulty.

    Any other suggestions.

    Windows XP SP2

    Thank You,

    Jorjab

I'm just thinking out loud here ....

It is possible that the free space on the Maxtor is being reported incorrectly, but there are other possiblities too. It is possible that there is some reserved space on the drive which cannot be released for other purposes, even though it is not being fully utilised - I am thinking here of System Restore. Is System Restore turned on for this drive? You can check this by right clicking on My Computer > Properties > System Restore Tab. Scroll down the list of Available Drives and check if the Maxtor is being monitored or turned off. If it is being monitored click on settings and turn off System Restore for that drive. BTW there is no point in running System Restore on anything but the root drive (C:\) - there are basically no system files on the other drives.

If you turn off System Restore on the Maxtor it should be possible to delete the System Restore folder - you may need to reboot first. To do this you must show the protected operating system files and folders through Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > and check 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'. You will see two hidden folders - Recycler (Recycle Bin) and System Volume Information (System Restore).

Could you go to my computer (or disk management) and check the format type of this USB drive?
My first guess would be that it is FAT32 which has a 4GB file size limitation (not so with NTFS). This often gives an out of disk space, file to large, or insufficient space error when you try to move / copy an file larger than 4GB from and NTFS format partition to a FAT32 partition.

Solution would be to convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS using the convert command in the command prompt.

How to convert a FAT volume to NTFS with convert.exe

No data should be lost in this conversion.

The convert to NTFS is probably the solution as it is a FAT 32 drive. Unfortunately I use it to transport data back and forth to 3 other pcs which are Win 98SE, so right now conversion is not a possibility. At least I know why it is happening.

I also did find that that the drive is being monitored and turned that off, although at this poiint I do not think that is the problem. I freed up more then enough space and the problem did not go away with Pete's solution. The Maxtor does appear to be reporting the correct used and unused size

Thank you to both Pete C and Oshywyn for the response to my problem.
I will just have to make sure my video files are kept in smaller segments as well as wait for my children to get Win XP PCs.

Google search - AVI file splitters
Create a new directory on your XP. Split source AVI to file sizes which meet FAT32 requirements on your external drive. Would require multiple tranfer steps -(OR)- burn files to DVD's

    EDIT
Help me out ... When you burn files to a DVD, it does not use FAT32 or NTFS file system? If correct, no need to convert files to FAT32 ... or for that matter, the external drive.

    Additional Edit

    Additional file splitters from SnapFile

Thank you but I already tried the search and could not find prograrms that work with my file. The problem is that my AVI file is still an undedited Camcorder download.
What I should have done with to begin with is just sit there and watch it download from the camcorder and make several files but I was to lazy. I have already spent more time on this then if I had not been lazy.

As they say "haste makes waste ". I am taking a class on editing camcorder videos and I wanted to take the entire video to class with me on Tuesday evening.

I have other videos I can use and will just have to go ahead and re download the video in the segments for making into my movies.

The UDF file system is used on CD/DVD's - files burnt to CD/DVD are 'converted' from FAT32/NTFS by the burning software and vice versa on read.

To clarify, the format is a characteristic of the disk, not of the file.
