    Hello,
I'm not sure if I'm in the right section to be asking this question but here goes.
I'm running Windows Vista and I see on the computer that I have Windows Movie Maker.
A friend from many years ago sent me a copy of a DVD that she had professionally transferred from an old 8 mm movie reel. On the DVD are different titles listed when I insert the DVD into the drive. I can play "all" or "select" scenes. I would only like to extract the two scenes of our children playing when they were very young. I don't want the other material because we don't know any of the people.

The files listed on the DVD are:
    Audio_TS (Folder is empty)
    Video_TS (VIDEO_TS.BUP,VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,
    VTS_01_0.BUP,
    VTS_01_0.IFO,
    VTS_01_0.BUP,
    VTS_01_1.VOB

Is it possible to extract just a portion of the DVD?

    Thanks for any help provided.

    Jean

You could use Windows Movie Maker
Open the VOB file with that (or import, I haven't used in years) and then edit out what you like

Yes, you must first convert the video (VOB) to a format that Windows Movie Maker can use.

Try Super to convert the files to MPG, then open in WMM and cut the scenes you want, paste into a new project and save them.

Super can then convert them to FLV format for embedding in a Web page (youtube style).

    Hello,
    Thank you for the information.
I did download "Super" but before I can convert the file, I will have to register and activate the program and it will cost me $39.00. Isn't there a freeware I can use because I only want to do this one time.

Thank you again for your help.

Thanks everyone for helping me with my video converting.

I now have "Freeze" and "Super" on my system. I am not too informed on these programs so before I am successful with one of them I think I'll have to read some help information.

I'll get back to you later after I try to succeed with one of them.

    Thank you.

    Hi Again,

Well I had a few hours to play with this project and I'm tired now but I'll let you know what I have done so far and maybe you can help me go on with it.

I was able to convert the movie from the Super program.

I tried to convert it using the Plato DVD Ripper Pro program but when I started the movie, it opened but the Status was "Fast Forward to Main Title ". When I tried to hit "Start" the error message would come up saying, "It is fast forwarding to main movie, so you could not start conversion now!" Then it kept repeating the fomie in fast forward.

After I was able to convert it, I had to save it as a MSWMM extension which is a Windows Movie Maker.

My question is now how can I get it in a Windows Media Player format so I can send it to my kids through email or post it on my webpage.

Please forgive me for being so dumb but I have never done anything like this before and I'm trying my best to complete this task.

Thank you again for all the excellent help.

I must have done something wrong as when I click the movie "Kids.MSWMM" that I have saved on my desktop, Windows Movie Macker opens. The name shown in the Movie Maker is VTS_01_1.VOB (1). If I double click the file it will play in the little window on the right.

How do I get it in a Windows Media Player format.

I meant to say earlier, I don't have the option "Publish Movie ", it is grayed out.

Depending on WMM, you may have File > Save Movie File

I think I am going to give up on trying to split the movie. Nothing seems to work when I play it back.

I'll start over tomorow and see what happens.

    Thanks for your help.
