I'm using Word 2010 and Outlook 2010 on a Win 7 PC, but I'm having trouble all of a sudden with the copy and paste function within and between each program.

When I go to try to copy and paste something either in Word or Outlook, it appears as a black filled-in circle -- a little black ball, like some sort of formatting mark.

But if I then go back and re-copy the text in question, and then try a second time to paste it, it works fine with all the options to keep the original formatting, merge formatting, etc. maintained.

I've checked the options in Word and Outlook but cannot see anything that would lead to a black-formatting circle mark being pasted instead of the text I'm trying to copy.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Again, it seems to happen only on my first attempt to paste after a copy. If I go back and re-copy the text in question, the paste function works as it should.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Is this only a problem involving Office 2010 products?

    Try this in Microsoft Word:

    • Select File > Options > Advanced
    • Under Cut, copy, and paste, uncheck Use smart cut and paste and set Pasting from other programs to Keep text only

There have also been reports that older Java versions can cause this, so if you have any version of Java older then the current one (Version 7 Update 21), uninstall the older version(s).

Thanks, Arie. I will check that out when I get home to my home PC tonight and then report back.

I haven't tried all use cases, but it does seem to be working. Thanks, Arie!
