Last summer I was touting Browster as a really neat Firefox "link preview" extension, but it has some drawbacks. Many users didn't like the fact that it must be installed, like a program, and others found the "lightning" icon too easy to activate accidentally. Still others objected to the fact that it didn't mark links already viewed.

Yesterday I discovered the CoolIris extension, which has all of Browster's advantages, and more, and none of its disadvantages. It's downloaded as an .xpi file, so it's installed like any other FF extension, it's small, it's fast, it marks already viewed links, and the activating icon doesn't get in the way.

    Bye bye Browster, hello CoolIris!

My 1.5.0.9, at least, does not come up with a scroll bar. I will have to try another browser. Has anyone who still uses 1.5.0.9 had this problem?

I can't speak for 1.5.0.9, as I'm running 2.0.0.1, but all CoolIris' features seem to work the way they're supposed to for me.

The extension's only shortcoming for me is that it doesn't work too well with things like Google search results, because its icon is mostly hidden behind the McAfee SiteAdvisor icon that's displayed after each result, requiring some particularly deft mouse work to actually access the CoolIris icon (could this be a sign that I've got too many extensions?!).

Other than that, though, I think it's a terrific extension - I love the "open current link in new tab" feature, and the ability to "stick" the frame (lock it in place).
Thanks for yet another keeper, Jim!

I downloaded CoolIris from FF2.0.0.1, and, on first review, I can do without it. However, I am keeping it, because I learned to heed Jim's advice. I did not think much of Mr Tech Local Install, which I find, now, indispensable.
As an aside, I installed CoolIris from the .xpi file in FF1.5.0.9 and 2.0.0.1. I decided that I did not want the extention in 2.0.0.1, so I selected to uninstall it. Nothing happened. so, I tried the same thing in 1.5.0.9. Again, CoolIris was still there, chuckling.
Finally, I tried again with 2.0.0.1, and it, finally, worked. I am going to keep CoolIris in 1.5.0.9, for now.
I was reporting this, because I have never seen anything like this.

I noticed that only after you mentioned it, Rebecca, but I haven't found it to be too much of a problem. Too many extensions? Nahhh! (I'm up to 22, and counting!)

I had no difficulty uninstalling CoolIris in FF 2.0.0.1, Westside, nor in reinstalling it. Doing so just seemed to take an inordinately long time.

    Jim,
I corrected my scrollbar problem in 1.5.0.9, by reinstalling the program.
as for CoolIris, it is possible that I did not wait long enough. It is, definitely, an intriguing extention.
