Not important, I suspect, but in versions of IE before IE7, the Temporary Internet Files folder contained a folder called Content.IE5 which had subfolders in groups of four (with alphanumeric names).
In IE7 when I clean my cache and delete these subfolders new ones are created (as before), but now the first batch contains five subfolders. As far as I can tell, one never gets used. (It contains only a desktop.ini file.) As the other four fill up, new subfolders are automatically created (as before) and this time in the usual batches of four.
Should this be the source of any concern?

    No, nothing to worry about.

And you misunderstand this folder. It does not, for example, serve as the store for FAVICONS.

There is no reason to fool with this folder directly, other than to delete it if you feel it is a privacy concern or is corrupt.

FAVICONS are stored in an ADS stream under the Temporary Internet Folder. Jeff Davos, the Microsoft developer of the favicon features in IE 7 explains: 'The icon is now stored in the alternate data stream of the .URL file rather than in the TIF where it was too easily lost. On FAT systems, then it's still in the TIF but the recovery algorithm is improved. "

Bill Castner--Thank you for your assurance that having five initial subfolders in Content.IE5, when using IE7, is nothing to worry about.
On the subject where IE7 stores Favicons, it is apparent that it is not Content.IE5. That, however, was the case in IE6 and why people kept losing their Favicons when they cleaned their cache.
Even in IE7 the Favicons still do download into Content.IE5's subfolders. (See image below.) But, as we agree, they are not stored there, since they remain linked to the Favorite even after the Content.IE5 subfolders are deleted. IE7's method of storing Favicons is superior to IE6's.
