(sorry if this should be in "Internet Help" Now really an internet problem...)

A strange thing started occurring to my DSL connection recently; that is that after my connection has been established for a while, the connection slows down an irritating degree. One can really notice this on sites like netflix where the text of the page will load pretty quickly, then it takes the small thumbnails and graphics forever to load - sometimes a minute or more.

I have tested this in my default browser - Firefox, IE7, Opera, and Safari. Same thing happens with each browser. I can reboot and everything is fine for a while, but at some point or another, the slow down happens again.

Virus or trojan, right? Well, I'm not so sure. I scanned with my commercial Kapersky (and it has resident protection), AVG Anti Trojan, AdAware, Spybot, HighJackThis, etc. No strange processes. I disconnected my router and downloaded a software firewall so I could monitor my ports and accesses.

Nothing strange there.. Kapersky access in its resident internet scan and IE or Firefox, or whatever access... nothing else at all that I can see.

I am really flummoxed over this. Any help will be appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Only a maybe, but investigate things that run script on webpages. Java, Flashwave, Shockwave, etc.

If there is statement at the website that says you need "such and such" player to view this website, that is probably the player you need to reinstall or update.

Nah, nothing like. I gave the thumbnails loading slow as an example, but it is overall performance that lacks. When my computer first boots it loads pages darn quick.

Any one have a guess as to what type of problem I am looking for. There is no activity on my DSL modem when this happen, so I do not believe it is from web traffic generated by a trojan or spyware. I guess I am not sure how to even trouble shoot at this point because I have no idea what I am looking for.

That eliminates a lot of potential possibilities.

Have you run any Speed tests or Tweak tests at DSLReports or another similar site? You may also want to look at this thread. There's some very good stuff referenced here which should help you home in on the source of your problem.

It also sounds as if you might have a line latency problem with your DSL provider - have they done any testing from the line tech side?

    ;)
