connection problem on 1 of 2 PC's on LAN

i hav a LAN with two equivilent PC's
WinXP PRO

one access sites very fast
the other slow, sometimes can't access sites at all (same sites tested on both PC's)
both use (ADSL)

only difference is i hav zonealarm on slow PC, BUT IT IS DISABLED!

What r possibilities??

 

using MSCONFIG is disabled all services that zonealarm uses and it is still slow so I RULED OUT zonealarm as a cause.

No Gasolene! Not an ISP issue.

Before doing the following are there any other issues on this computer?

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. How easy is it to switch cables or jumper cables?

On your hub you have a set of lights for each cable, do the diagnostic lights match the good connection.

Does the lights on the NIC match the good machine (assuming you have the same NIC in both). If not look in the manual for the NIC and see what the lights mean. On some brands green is good, yellow is error, red no connection.

Make sure the XP firewall is not active.

If you have Norton, turn all these off and retest!

If all check good then, note all settings and verify against the one that is OK.

From each machine ping the other and your ISP. Compare, are there big differences?

Ping each NIC from the command prompt use Ping -t -l 1024 127.0.0.1 and let run for a minute. If you get no errors then the NIC is responding properly and is likely OK.

If these are OK, go to device manager and remove the Network card and let it reinstall when reboot. You have noted the settings to use to reinstall.

I see your name here often so I know you must be aware of the importance of cleanups, make sure to cleanup all temps and spy/adware. Even if these are not the cause they can hinder trouble shooting!

i thought maybe because my ISP is frequently down and unreliable and i am getting DNS error on slow PC

computer runs fine, very clean (these problems only started a couple days ago)

all leds on switch are normal

both NIC's are green

it's disabled

done

done (both PC's are almost identicle software)

request time out on both machines when i ping the other
i could ping the ISP fine on both

no errors, all repleys within 1 ms

I use lavasoft adware,
use zonealarm
frequent GRC.com
use norton virus2003
i clean system frequently (there are NO processess/applications that i do not know what they are for)
no spyware ect...
no third party utilities running
system tray nothing but norton/msn/zonealarm
almost new like condition

note: for all tests firewalls were disabled on both PC's

1 more note: the slow PC does hav a connection (I'm using it now) it also tests at the same speed using bandwidth test sites
however some sites have DNS error on slow PC, every site works fine on other PC


Is it possible that the DNS server is different for each machine???

each machine has different dynamic IP and has registered mac address

Do you share files or printers on these 2 computers? They should ping! If no ping should not share.

how do they differ?
are these the ip numbers you pinged? If not use these!

how do they differ?

And another thing I'd try - assuming you have a PCI card NIC rather than built in:

power down and remove the NIC. When you replace it, make sure it is seated firmly and all the way down. Maybe compare the amount of connector you can see with the other PC.

It is possible the card just isn't seated fully or also that the mother board is mounted slightly off and something is physically preventing the NIC from going in all the way.

They are much worse about acting up than other types of cards.

NetSpy in both its incarnations are bad.

If it is the trojan it allows remote control of your computer.
The other NetSpy is like a spy, a parent or boss would use to spy on what happens on a computer. May in fact be the same.

Norton's latest defs clean this. So update and do full scan.

You can for sure soon turn your Firewall back on!

Did you do this also insafe mode:

last thing in safe mode before reboot

command prompt ipconfig /flushdns

then in full mode before the online trojan

ipconfig /flushdns (yes again)
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /registerdns


If so run:

ipconfig /displaydns
see if turds are gone

If so how does the system work now?

If Ok reinstate the firewall and virus scanner.

After firewall is back in, redo the Trojan scan you shold see a diff in open ports.

download and install the following but do not run

again after cleaning flush all before reboot

It is worth the time to do tau! But this should do it.

Find your hosts file, paste it back to me I will edit it to block these adservers and paste it back to you. That will take care of them!

I am not sure how they are getting back on.

You need to check your add/remove for anything unusual and uninstall anything you don't know about or will never use just to be sure.

Then browse c:\Program files for anything that is not in add/remove or that you don't know about!

Did you read the link about grokster in detail and search for the files it mentioned and delete them. If not do so!
