I am running Windows 2000 SP2 on a 1.7 GHz CompaQ with 512M ram. After startup netstat -a shows 3 connection attempts to windowsupdate.com via http. The network indicator is continually active sending and receiving about 5 KB almost every second. The machine is very sluggish when starting apps or windows.

I suspect there is some trace left from an earlier aborted windows update but I am at a total loss as to how to fix this.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Your system is probably checking to see if there is an update to your OS. This feature can be downloaded from the windowupdate site. It's called critical update checker.
