I have a laptop running xp, and my home computer running 2000, and I want to connect the two using a direct cable connection so I can transfer files. Both have working firewire ports. I connected the two by firewire, xp automatically configured the connection and gave it an ip address, but 2000 tries to install new hardware "microsoft 1394 pc" or "nic1394 ". i'd like to get this to work without getting another xp license, and can't find any decent help info from microsoft about direct 1eee1394 connections for 2000.

I don't think Microsoft supported ieee1394 natively in Windows 2000, but I have seen firewire cards working in Windows 2000.
Have you gone back to the supplier of the computer or firewire card to see if they have a driver for Windows 2000? They may have something that you can download from their web site.

I'll try new firewire drivers, but I haven't had problems with it in the past. I've downloaded from a dv camera to premiere and had no problems, so the port is working. But i don't see any thing in my network settings for the firewire port, and when i try to set up any sort of new connection, firewire is not in any of the options. My problem is getting 2000 to allow a direct connection for filesharing between computers. I guess I could use a serial cable, but I really want to get that direct 400mb/s transfer rate vs the 4mb/s that you get from serial, since i'm doing a lot of graphics intensive work with large files. Btw, the forewire port is on an audigy card that I installed.

If you continue to have no luck with firewire, go with parallel rather than serial for your DCC. Lots faster. Lots.

i don't have a parallel port on my laptop, unfortunately. I think I may just buy a router and use ethernet. i really want to get a firewire direct connection to work with 2000 though, so if anyone else reads this and knows how, please let me know. I've read posts in other forums that talk about copying drivers from xp, and apparently that doesn't work either.
