I've just acquired an Acer Veriton X4620G computer. While I'm waiting for my new monitor I'm wondering if a 2006 Dell monitor loaned to me can be temporarily used by plugging the vga cable into it and connecting the power cable? Does the monitor need an installation disk or drivers? If so, how do you install such drivers/disk if you can't see the screen to go through the procedure because it hasn't been 'installed'?

I thought that I might just connect it and see if that worked, but then asked myself how I might properly close down the computer if I didn't have a screen to view the process. Would simply pressing the power button on the pc to turn it off be detrimental to its health?

    Thank you. :)

That should not be a problem - no drivers are required for monitors

On the off chance that the monitor does not show pressing the power button for a few seconds should turn it off - more than likely on reboot you will see a screen informing you that Windows shut down unexpectedly and offer to start in one of the Safe modes or Start Windows normally - select this option. As long as the computer is not writing to disk, e.g. saving a file no harm should come from this action.

Oops! The moniter vga cable AND the pc vga socket are both male. I've just now ordered a female-to-female adapter and will report back when that arrives.

If it's 9-pin male, (5 pins on one row and 4 pins under those), it's a serial port. VGA is 15-pin, (three rows with 5-pins each).

I believe the back panel on your computer looks like the attached:

Looks like he needs a VGA to DVI adaptor...

This arrangement is exactly what I need to marry the pieces together. One end (male) goes into the DVI and the other end (female) attaches to the male VGA

Correct. A DVI-male to VGA-female adapter (like the one I linked to above). Plug it into the DVI port on the back of your computer, then plug your Dell monitor into your new VGA port. Whenever you get a newer monitor with a DVI cable, simply remove the adapter and plug the monitor directly into the computer.
