Currently my dsl modem is connected to a router, which is connected to the ethernet port on the computer. When I try to bypass the router and connect the modem directly to the computer I lose my internet connection. Is there a way I can connect directly to the computer? When I first set up my dsl it worked, but my son added a router for wireless connections to his laptop, but he is moving and plans on taking the router with him, but my direct connection modem to computer won't work now? Help?

    1. Unplug power from the modem.
    2. Turn off computer.
    3. Connect modem directly to computer via ethernet.
    4. Power up modem, wait until it synches.
    5. Turn on computer.

    Why?
Because the modem is currently associated with the MAC address of the router and it needs to associate with the MAC address of the computer's network card. The above sequence will let the modem do just that.

    You're welcome.
However, it would be a wise choice to go out and buy a cable/dsl home router. It need not be wireless, but if son or friend's visit and bring their laptops they could connect easily. Plus the router offers built in security, blocking external access to to your computer. These routers are now very inexpensive, 25-50 bucks will get you what you need.
