I just installed netscape 7. To install it I had to download the 32mb file, the other way did not work. After installing the browser it was't able locate and display any websites. I use verizon dsl to connect. I have windows ME. In my preferences I tried both checking off direct connection and automatic neither worked. I have java and cookies enabled. I don't know what else to try. Additionally my IE browser works fine. Please help Thank you.

    Welcome to the Forum, jgchess!

    Hi jgchess,

Tell us exactly what happens when you click on the Netscape icon: errors, a flash, or anything else? We can go from there.

    Thanks,

    Ramona :D

The browser opens as if nothing is wrong. Right after signing into verizon a little box appears connecting to server. Then when I open the browser the home page which is netscape doesnot appear. A box opens up which states, home.netscape.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again. This is in an alert box. Also when trying to reach any web page the same does occur. I hope this is enough. Thank you

    jgchess,

Several things for you to try:

    in Preferences|Navigator
Under: When Navigator starts up display
    select: Blank Page
    Under Home Page Location
delete any link that is there and leave a blank

disable Quick Launch (if it is enabled)

    check your Firewall,

    Ramona :D

    (Besides the other suggestions)

To rule out a DNS server (domain name server) issue:

Can you access sites using the IP address instead of the site name in the url, for example,

http://64.12.151.215 is the URL using the IP address instead of the site name "home.netscape.com "

    http://64.246.0.184 is "www.windowsbbs.com "

Go to http://samspade.org/ and enter a site name under Quick Tools, IP Whois to find the IP addresses for other sites.

    Broni,Ramone, and Alice

Thank you for the suggestions but none of them worked. I tried both automatic proxy configuration and direct connection. I also set the start page as blank, deleted link and disabled quick launch. I don't have a firewall and with verizon there are no proxies. When I tried Alices suggestion regarding dns the alert read as follows. The connection was refused when attempting to contact 64.246.0.184. I also tried other addresses with the same result. I called verizon and they don't have tech support for netscape 7 yet. If it was netsxape 6 she would have gone to the profile manager and work from there. When I clicked on profile manager from the programs list the normal netscape browser opened. Additionally just to indicate my connection is ok I was able to browse fine with IE. I hope this helps. Hopefully we can resolve the problem and thanks again. jgchess my real name is Jeffrey

I don't know if this will help but it can't hurt too much, seeing that Netscape7 isn't working!

-In Netscape: Go to Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Proxies:
Make sure your settings there match whatever you have set up in your Internet Explorer Internet Options, Connections tab, Settings (Lan Settings)

-Disable any 'webwasher', 'adblocker', 'pop-up killer' or similar third-party internet software you may have running.
-Look for a C:\Windows\HOSTS file (thats HOSTS with no extension). If you find such a file, rename it something like XHOSTS.
-If you had a previous version of Netscape installed and you reused the profile, do a Find for prefs.js in your Netscape7 profile folder, which would be similar to C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourprofilename\xxxxxx.slt and rename it prefs.OLD. Do the same for user.js (rename it user.old). You will need to re-enter your mail and news server settings so copy them from Internet Explorer which you know works.
-Open the Netscape Profile Manager and set up a new profile

I have 2 files like that. Both in windows on is HOSTS 1KB A\SAM FILE
The other is hosts 0kb no classification

Should I rename both. If I do this will this affect any of my other programs.

Additionally I never had netscape in my computer.

My connection settings are the same as in IE.

I just tried installing opera the same has occured. I don't understand.

    Thanks again

Just rename the HOSTS file, not the hosts.sam (the Hosts.sam is a "sample" hosts file). You can name it anything, Hosts.txt XHOSTS or even GHOSTS ;)

This is what I've gathered on Hosts file:

The HOSTS file is created by some "web enhancer" programs to speed up browsing, by including the IP address for sites you requently visit, thus bypassing the DNS server lookup that translates the domain name to a numeric IP address..

The Hosts file can also be used to block certain sites, for example,

    127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.com
(127.0.0.1 is the designation for your own computer)

I'm not sure how HOSTS file got on your computer in the first place but I'm guessing either a "web enhancer" or "adblocker" type program put it there.

That's why I said to rename it in stead of deleting it, so that you can always rename it back to HOSTS if you so choose.

I was thinking this might get rid of the errors you get on normal sites like home.netscape.com, in case, for some reason, Netscape7 is "choking" on your HOSTS file It won't get rid of the "connection refused" error when you click on a link that is already in IP-address format, though. That's another issue, which I thought renaming the prefs.js or setting up a new Netscape profile might help.

Now that you say Opera has the same problem, I'm beginning to wonder, if your ISP software is to blame...maybe you have to specially configure your browser to work with Verizon DSL? I just have a regular dial-up account so I'm afraid I can't be much help.

PS: Here's a site that explains about the HOSTS file in more detail:

The HOSTS file is part of the Windows OS. Your HOSTS file should look similar to this:

    # Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    ---

If you have entries other than the examples shown, delete them.

Open your HOSTS file in Notepad and take a look.

I found that another program that may place a HOSTS file on your system is Norton Antivirus, for e-mail scanning, for example:

127.0.0.1 pop3.norton.antivirus # Added by Norton AntiVirus for e-Mail scanning
127.0.0.1 pop3.spa.norton.antivirus # Added by Norton AntiVirus for e-Mail scanning

So those entries should not be deleted.

As I mentioned before, you might want to just RENAME the HOSTS file. If it doesn't help stop the errors accessing sites, rename it back.

I use Norton AV, and have neither of those entries in my HOSTS file. Doesn't mean that you won't. FYI

I just posted a reply to Alex Ethridge who seems to be having the same problem as you are experiencing. This was suggested as a possible fix:
You might give this a try.
