I need to connect a Win98 PC to our network which is WinXP. I know I need to create a disk using WinXP to run on the Win98 PC but can't find how to do it.

    dishon,

I have a 98 system networked to two XP systems and never had to use a disk created by XP to do that. Just get your settings in and you should be fine.

Mike is correct. You do not need the disk and if you are speaking of having XP build a floppy to automatically set 98 up as part of the network, it isn't such a great idea. The wizard seems to get confused with other operating systems.

All you should have to do is:

    1. Have or install a network card in the 98 PC.
    2. Give the 98 PC a name that is different than any other PC on your network. 15 or fewer alpha-numeric characters and _ or - are fine in the name.
    3. Put in the same workgroup name as the other PCs use.
    4. Assign an IP address that is similar but not identical to the other PCs. For most home networks, that means giving it a different number in the last octet (group of 3 numbers) in the IP address and between 1-254 so if another PCs use 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 then make the new one 192.168.0.10 or 192.168.0.154 or something.
    5. Assign the same subnet mask and default gateway the others use.
    6. Start logging on to the 98 PC with a username and non-blank password when it starts.
    7. Make sure the Guest account is active on the other PCs. At setup the default with XP-pro is to have it disabled but you can easily enable it. XP-home has it enabled by default.
    8. Since you have more than one other PC you must be using a hub or switch so the last step is to connect 98 to the device using a normal patch cord.
