[Inactive] Computer would not re-boot. Found "Softonic" registry key

Hi,

I have an older laptop (Toshiba Satellite, Windows Vista) that I have never had any real problems with, but it started acting odd recently. It would boot-up and get past then windows loading screen, then it would stop. The fan also started running very loud.

I re-booted and safe-mode without any problem and ran MBAM and found a registry key "PUP.Optional.Softonic.A ". Again, I've had this computer almost 7 yrs and it has various items in the MBAM quarantine. This is the first one that has caused any kind of problem.

I've given y'all some tough fixes in the past, but it has worked out great. As always, thanks for your help!

Please, observe following rules:
• Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
• If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
• Please refrain from running any tools, fixes or applying any changes to your computer other than those I suggest.
• Never run more than one scan at a time.
• Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
• The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
• If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
• I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

A few things...

So far I cannot boot up in anything other than Safe Mode w/ networking. I was able to run the ROGUEKILLER program, but I can't seem to find the system restore function in Safe Mode. I wasn't sure it was safe to proceed so I haven't yet. Let me know what you think.

Also, the RogueKiller program seems to have created a folder called "RK_Quarantine" on my desktop as well as two log files. I'll post the logs below.

Let's try something else..

NOTE 1. Use another working computer to download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. Use USB flash drive to transfer it from good computer to the bad one.
NOTE 2. Install Panda USB Vaccine, or BitDefender’s USB Immunizer on GOOD computer to protect it from any infected USB device.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 32-Bit and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-Bit and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

If you are using Windows 8 consult How to use the Windows 8 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt to enter System Recovery Command prompt.

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
• Restart the computer.
• As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
• Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
• Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
• Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
• Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
• Insert the installation disc.
• Restart your computer.
• If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
• Click Repair your computer.
• Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
• Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
• Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

• Startup Repair
• System Restore
• Windows Complete PC Restore
• Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
• Command Prompt
• Select Command Prompt
• In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
• The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
• Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
• In the command window type e:\frst (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
• The tool will start to run.
• When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
• Press Scan button.
• It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Seems like nothing is easy.

I don't have Repair your computer as one of the options on my Advanced Boot Options menu. I looked it up and it seems that it's probably because that feature wasn't installed when I installed Windows.

I put my Windows disc in to see if I could get it to boot up from that and it froze for hours at the "Starting Windows" screen. It's similar, but not the same as what happens when I start my computer normally from the HDD.

This is where it gets weird...I did a "hard" shutdown on the computer and turned it back on. It gave me a screen about not booting correctly and I think I chose "start windows normally" and it worked. It took a while for all the networking and stuff to come back, but it booted up normally.

So, I created the system restore point, downloaded MBAR, and it ran and found an issue. It didn't ask to restart my computer, but I thought it would be a good idea. I planned on running MBAR again after it rebooted, but it never came back on. It continued doing what it had done before (freezing and the starting windows screen).

I'm currently trying to recreate the steps I took to get it to start normally, but I don't know if it will work again. If it does boot up normally, should I try and run Farbar Recovery Scan tool? Is there a better course of action? Sorry this is getting complicated. Thanks for your help as always.

So...it has not been nice enough to boot up normally since last night. I'm on with Safe Mode (w/networking) now to get you the logs from MBAR. I have yet to run it a 2nd time. I'll post the logs below.

Let me know what you think I should do next (assuming I still can't boot up normally). I'll update if it magically works again.

Please download ComboFix from Here, Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
• Never rename Combofix unless instructed.
• Close any open browsers.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
If the connection is not there use restore point you created prior to running Combofix.
• Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

• NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
• When finished, it will produce a report for you.
• Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG and CA Internet Security (Total Defense Internet Security) users: ComboFix will not run until AVG/CA Internet Security is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG/CA Internet Security "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG/CA Internet Security cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG/CA Internet Security first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion, restart computer to fix the issue.
**Note 4: Some infections may take some significant time to be cured. As long as your computer clock is running Combofix is still working. Be patient.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try the following...

Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to your_name.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

Restart computer in safe mode

• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
• If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
• A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
• If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
• Do not reboot until instructed.
• If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill.txt log.
NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.

IF you had to run rKill post BOTH logs, rKill.txt and Combofix.txt.

Combofix ran but there were a couple of things I noticed:

No matter how I tried to close the firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials, Combofix told me they were still running. When I looked at each of the programs they would say they weren't running because I was in Safe Mode. I don't know if this affected the running of Combofix.

Also, while it was running it would occasionally say something along the lines of "Combofix cannot perform this action without administrator privileges." I couldn't tell you exactly where or when, but it did still finish running.

When it finished it restarted the computer. I was hoping it might restart normally but it did not.

I'll post the log below.

I have what I believe to be a Windows installation disc, but as I said before, it also freezes at the "starting windows" screen.

I will definitely try and make a new one, but I'm having trouble with the links on the page you posted. All of the links for the ".exe" file needed seem to be broken. They all go to a weird page that reads "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." Am I missing something?

I need the files for the 32bit Windows Vista Ultimate. The disc I have was made from when I first installed Vista Ultimate on that machine for free back in college. It was a free download from the university at the time. I will also see if I can find the original disc for Vista Home Premium if you think it might help.

Sorry for the confusion. Let me know what you think would work best.

Those download links come and go for whatever reason. Keep trying them. I'm getting same error.
If they still don't work in couple of days let me know.

So it's been a few days and I have been checking on those links every so often...still no luck with the ".exe" file for 32 bit.

I also found some more disks with my computer box. One was the Toshiba Recovery disk which said it would re-install Windows Vista Home Premium along with the rest of the old software. It wouldn't boot-up from that disk.

It also would not boot-up from disks that contained an .iso for Windows Vista Ultimate and a Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade disk. The .iso didn't even ask me to "Press any button to boot from CD or DVD." Maybe it was made incorrectly, but I'm positive it was an .iso for Ultimate.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

At this point...

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
You'll get more attention.

Good luck :)
