HI all, been a while. For several years now I just leave the computer on even when I'm not doing anything with it. Most of the time it will "go to sleep" after being unused. When I come back to it I will usually have to press the space bar or move the mouse to wake it up. Today this action has failed to bring results. I can't wake the computer up anymore without a restart via Control-Alt-Delete. Once the computer is running its as good as always. Any ideas? TIA

BTW - I'm running Win98FE on a five year old computer. Also Power Management in the Control Panel is unchanged.

Try disbaling the power saving settings in the BIOS. Windows doesn't like being told when to wake up by the BIOS. Then again, there are a lot of things Windows doesn't like!

HI Ryder, thanks, but it seems I don't have to do anything. For some unforseen reason the thing is working again. I left the computer on overnight to see what it would do and this morning it woke up just like it always did. I'm beginning to think this darn thing is haunted.

Never been in the bios. Never had to. I assumed Windows handled power management, didn't know the bios did, I thought bios was only for startup; loading all startup programs. In any case if I have this problem again I'll try your advise, heck might do it anyway to keep the problem from reoccuring. Thanks again.

Power management is handled independantly by both Windows and the BIOS, which can cause the sort of problems you described. Basically when you move the mouse, the BIOS says "That's for me" and Windows goes "No it's not, it's mine ". They continue arguing with each other, ignoring the request to either of them to restore the PC. That's why I always disable the BIOS power saving features - that, and it tends to be unresponsive as well, even without the Windows power saving turned on.

Glad that it's working OK now tho,
