When I try to shut down my computer, at least half the time there is something called "iexplore.exe" that won't shut down. I have to use the power button to shut the computer down. Any idea?

maryverdev - Welcome to the Board :)

iexplore.exe is the executable file for Internet Explorer.

Would be helpful to know which OS you are running - Win 98, XP, Vista ... and the version of Internet Explorer - 6 or 7 before going any further.

I have Windows XP Home and IE 6

Thanks for trying to help. I've never been on a discussion board before and am having to learn how to do this as well!

    Really appreciate your thoughts...

    Mary - no problem :)

Another question - do you have the Yahoo tool bar installed? - this is known to cause a number of problems.

Please right click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager. In the window which opens click on the Processes tab and then on the Image Name header bar to sort in alpha order - clicking a second time reverses the sort order. How many instances of iexplore.exe do you see? Screenshot.

    Hi Pete...

I only see one instance of iexplore.exe in the task manager.

I don't think i have Yahoo Toolbar on my IE page. I have the Google Toolbar there and am assuming that is where it would be if I had the Yahoo toolbar. I also looked under Programs and didn't see anything like that. If there is some other place I should look I'm afraid you'll have to tell me.

P.S. Of course, since you are trying to help me solve this, my computer isn't doing it right now. Thought I'd let you know in case it matters....

Mary and Pete: I had (have) a similar problem where Outlook Express's msimn.exe file won't shut down when I close OE and subsequently the computer hangs when shutting down as the file won't close. The interesting part is that it only hangs when I have gone online to check mail. It will shut down OK if I just open and close OE. I have tracked it down to a conflict with my av program, CA Antivirus. So far I have not found any solution. Even wrote CA support and they had no solution and in fact didn't even seem to know about it. (May be peculiar to my setup:eek: ) Shutting down or disabling the AV did not correct the problem.

My work around was to go the Mozilla Thunderbird mail, which works fine.

As OE and IE are closely linked, perhaps what Mary is experiencing is a similar problem. To test if this is your problem try opening and closing IE without going online and see if the computer shuts down OK. After you close IE see if the iexplore.exe file is gone from the task manager. Or try using the Firefox browser only for a bit.

Sorry not much help, but you never know.:D

JohnB - thanks for the input :)

Coincidentally up until recently I ran CA antivirus (for a couple of years), but never had a problem with OE. I had other issues with CA and switched to NOD32.

    Please see IEFIX here .....

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Ignore the 'Fixes the following Problems' section which you will see does not include your problem, but the 'fix' repairs and reregisters IE, which may resolve your problem.

Tried to follow the instructions and....

    Hi Pete:
I am trying to do what you suggested and I think you may be right about this as a solution. However, as usual when I try to do something besides play solitaire  I am stuck.

I got the file downloaded and put my XP Home CD into the computer. FYI I'm pretty sure that I added Service Pack 2 after installing XP. (not absolutely sure...)

I tried every way of entering the file path that was suggested and I tried just sending it to the E drive (where the XP disc now is) and nothing seemed to work.

I don't know if you can help me without seeing what is going on firsthand but all thoughts will be appreciated.

The actual screen I am getting stuck at is:

(after hitting "apply ") The file IEXPLORE.EXE on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD is needed.
    Thanks again.

    Lynne

    I take it all back...

    Hi Pete:
I think I got the process to work. At this point I don't know if the problem is solved but it looked like something happened and at the moment everything seems to be working again.

I am hopeful that the fix took and the problem is solved. Am keeping the instructions for future reference. (hopefully not...)

I've never used anything like this before and wondered how it works that people like you are available to help. Do you do this for free?.... as a service to the community?....

You have my heartfelt thanks! Is there a more concrete way I can support this work continuing?

Good news - I hope :) Post back if the problem remains.
