ok so when i run my comp i get a failed operation, so the F8 screen with safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command, Last know good config, and boot windows normally come up in selection. when i try any of them the comp freezes. any of the safe mode options run most of the system files put hangs b4 it can finish. and for LKGC it runs then stop b4 anything can happen same thing when i try to run windows normally.

so ive tried to scan disk, and defrag there were plenty of problems there. so i fixed them now i need to restore the system files but dont know which are missing. how can i find out which ones are not there? or how can i find which system files need to load to run minimum system requirments? PLEASE IM IN NEED OF SERIOUS HELP!

Do not run defrag on the system as there are errors on the hard disk. Its going to make the problem only worse.

I would first advice you to take a backup of your files by connecting your hard disk to another computer as slave.

Run chkdsk /r on the hard disk to get a better picture of the disk. This would look for physical as well as logical damage. If there are bad sectors on the disk, they would be locked but data would be lost. [Could take a couple of hours - so I would leave it for overnight].

Try Windows Repair install. This should refresh almost all the system files but you would have to apply all the patches & probably reinstall the programs.

    Hi ministone22,

What rsinfo suggested was an XP Repair.

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

While the repair won't touch the user data, it is a good idea to backup, including the contents of the Documents and Settings folder which contian My Documents - My Pictures - Favorites and so on.

And you will have to re install programs, for that you need the setup files either on cd's or hopefully saved in folders on the HD or on cd.

Can you as rsinfo suggested to take a backup of your files by connecting your hard disk to another computer as slave?

Some advice once you get thru this:

Seperate the OS from the data by creating an OS only partition and one for user data.

The OS partition then can be easily and qiuckly drive imaged or repaired or re installed w/o worrying about your data.

The user data then can be easily backed up in any number ways - cd/dvd or an external HD.

This thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=49222 by Christer quides you thru moving the the Documents and Settings folder(s) which contains My Documents - My Pictures - Favorites and so on (part of user data) to a data partition so you don't even have to worry about XP's default folders.

    Regards - Charles
