I have my father in laws computer, it is running 98SE and has a network card installed and working. He uses peoplepc dial up. I am trying to connect his computer to my router so I can download updates for him. I have the cat cable connected but each time I hit the "e" to connect it prompts the peoplepc program to start and looks for a modem to connect. I have tried to go into the peoplepc settings to look for the option to set it to connect via network card but could not find any such settings. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Open Internet Explorer, then click on tools, then Internet Options. Then go to the connection tab and select never dial a connection and try it again.

You may have to verify that your computer has received an IP address from the router but thats another issue after you make this change.

Okay I did that, here is what happens when I start the computer, I get this prompt(error) or something like it I cannot remember the exact wording.

"there is a conflict with ip address 192.168.1.1 with the hardware having address 00:06:25:6d:6b:bd, the interface has been disabled "

    thank you

It means the IP address you have entered into your network properties is already used on the network by another computer or device.

192.168.1.1 is the address of the Router and should not be used by anything else.

Turn DHCP on in the Router and set your machine to "Obtain an IP address automatically "

this was already done, still no connection so I removed the ethernet card from the device manager and let the system re-detect and BOOM it worked, thanks for all the advice.
