I have a small home wireless network with an old (6 yrs) XP desktop computer connected by wire to the router. My system specs are based on this computer. I have another old XP desktop computer (6 yrs) in a workgroup with wireless connection to the internet. And a fairly new (1+1/2 yr) Windows 7 laptop with wireless connection to the internet. Everything was working well but the wireless signal was not encrypted and did not require a password to access the internet. In the interest of more security, I set up encryption and required a password on the router. I had no trouble on the laptop setting it up to access the internet. But I canot get the old XP desktop to use the wireless to access the internet. I have used all the setup and repair programs in XP without sucess. In the list of available networks, my network (dlink) shows 3 bars, not strong but worked before. However the icons in the Sys-tray do not show any bars. My experience says they must show something to make it work. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

What kind of security, WPA or WEP?

The old adapter may not support WPA. Most wifi adapters made before 2003-2005 or so don't support WEP. Sometimes the adapter manufacturer released driver updates which added WPA support. Check the computer manufacture site for latest drivers, or check directly at the adapter manufacturer site.

I put WEB on because I had used it sucessfully before. I had tried WPA first and when that didn't work, switched back to WEB. Are you suggesting I try to get new drivers?

No need for new drivers if just using WEP security.
For best results with wifi in XP, don't use the adapter manufacturer connection software, use Windows Wireless Zero to manage wifi connections.

If you had previously setup a connection to your wifi router without security, then completely remove that connection and create a new one. In Windows Wireless Zero, click on Change order of preferred networks and remove the existing connection.

I want to try that but how do I get Windows Wireless Zero? I can not get on the Internet. Is it part of Windows XP someplace?

The problem is solved. It turns out that a program, Cisco Network Magic Essentials, which I downloaded from the router CD, was blocking the addition of any computer to the network. The program opens the block when you tell it you want to add something. After that, getting on the internet from my other computer was straightforward. Thanks for the help anyway.
