    Hello everyone,

I am confused on how to figure out why my computer will start/boot up when my telephone rings! I have gone to the Power Management thing (under BIOS) and disabled the "wake on ring" option, but that didn't help.

I have tried searching the web for some type of help with this but the only thing that seems to come up is to disable what I have already done.

This has only recently started since I disabled the "fast shutdown" option due to another problem I was experiencing.

Anyone have any other suggestions on what I might try?

    Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

P.S. IBM Aptiva #2153E3U, AMD 300MHz processor, BIOS version V3.2 V70EN4B, Win98, IE/OE 5.5, NAV (all updates have been applied).

Need alittle more info. I assume you use dialup.
    1. Do you have a separate line for your computer?
    2. Do you have a separate program, like a "internet answering Machine" installed?
    3. Do you have call waiting?
    4. Do you have one of those router boxes to catch calls while online?

Sorry for not including more information. Here are the answers to your questions, aleekat.

1). No separate phone line (using dial-up)
    2) Yes, I do have "Internet Answering Machine" installed.
    3) No call waiting.
    4) No router box to catch calls.

Will be happy to supply any other information needed in order to help with the correcting of this annoyance!

    Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

Check your mobo manual - there may be a WOR jumper.

    Huh?

Sorry, brett, but I'm not sure what you are referring to with "mobo" manual and "WOR jumper "? (My computer terminology isn't all that vast.)

    Appreciate all the suggestions, though.

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

mobo = mother board or main board

WOR = wake on ring, there may be a couple of pins to put a jumper over or to remove one

Why don't you re-enable "fast shutdown" and see it that corrects the problem. If so, post your other problem that caused you to disable fast shutdown in the first place.

    Vicki,

Hello fellow Aptiva owner! You just have to love the MWave card, don't you. The easiest way to disable this wake up feature is to pull the cable. Open your case and find the black cable that runs from your MWave card to the motherboard. Disconnect an end and your problem is gone.

Sorry for leaving you puzzled. But at least it sounds as though you now have a definitive answer from Mike!

    Thanks!

Thanks, MNMike, I do believe that worked! Although I'm not sure what the heck an "MWave" card is, I did disconnect a black and red twisted cable/wire that was attached to the modem and yippee--no more waking up the computer when the phone rings! :D

To aleekat: I periodically try to reinable fast shutdown, but it just doesn't work (I actually have the reason I had to disable it posted in another thread--due to a fatal exception error).

I just think it's odd that all this has happened in the first place. I don't do any playing of games, movies, or downloading (except for Windows or NAV updates). But as long as my computer seems to be working fine now, I guess I can live without the fast shutdown.

    Thanks again everyone!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

    Vicki,

Glad it helped! The evil MWave card, which was in my Aptiva 2176, was a combination sound and modem card. The thing was a real pain in the neck. I had to look and now see that you didn't have the MWave card. Lucky you! :D Anyways, the solution worked.
