When we go to turn on our computer, we first turn on the power strip/surge protector. The printer, monitor, and speakers power up. When we push the button on the front of the computer, though, nothing happens. After about five minutes, we can then push the button and the computer starts. Any suggestions on how to address this?
    Thanks.

If the computer is not disconnected from the power source, does it still have the "lag "?

One type I know will do something similar are IBM's. I expect it is some sort of safety measure for the electronics.

Me, I would leave it connected to the mains supply, I think that is what the manufacturer would expect. If you disconnect it I think you will just need to live with the lag.

Matt, a surge protector here in the UK is the mains supply with protection from lightening strikes etc. Perhaps you or the OP are thinking of a UPS?

However, your advice to connect directly to the mains (for testing) is good but then I'd test other surge protectors rather than leaving delicate devices connected directly to the mains.
