Can someone tell me whether it's good/bad to keep the computer switched on 24/7?

    minghar,

First of all, welcome to the board! I have found that my systems slow down a little the longer that they are on. I keep mine on during the day but shut them down at night. Unless you have3 a specific reason for wanting it left on, I would shut it down when you won't be using it for a few hours.

My WinXP pro system is on 365/24/7.

The only reboot I normally do is when advised by MS security updates. Last time the computer was "off" for several hours was because of a prolonged (6 hour) power cut, and a few days ago I rebooted because I had "lost" my Internet connection. Just wanted to try everything before calling my ISP, but the problem wasn't on my side. They had to reset my port at the data center.

Even when I travel abroad, my main system is on (because of the 60-80 MB daily backups I receive from our server(s)), and I work on the computer via Remote Desktop.

Can't say I see any slowing down.

Oh, I would also say that if there's no real need, just switch it of during the time you're not using it for a longer time (like at night, or if you are off to work).

My WinXP Pro SP1 system is on 95% (monitor off when not in use) of the time unless I'm gone for a trip then I shut it down until I get back. I have 2 other PC's that are only turned on when needed then turned off.

If you decide to keep your PC on make sure you turn off your Monitor when your done...you'll save on wear/tear and save on your Electricity bill. :)

    IMHO,

If you *need* to run the PC 24/7 and don't mind the power consumption then do it. Turn off the monitor (particularly if it's a CRT variety) as this can be a fire hazard. Shutdown the PC if you are going to be away from home for any period of time to lessen a fire risk.

Remember that the longevity of the PC will not necessarily be increased by leaving it on, and may infact be lessened in some cases. I always use the analogy of how many times your TV set is switched on/off and how many years that it keeps running for.

Consequently mine gets shutdown each night or when I won't be using it for a few hours.

I remember a comment I made on this heated subject a while back. Many people who subscribe to the "Leave it on" camp and who arn't using it 24/7 are the same people who subscribe to the silly theory of leaving a power amp on 24/7 because it is sonically better. What a load of ROT! :D

    Thanks all for responding.
The general view is to shut down at night when I go to bed.
