Hi...i have posted other messages on here and your help was great , so i thought i would try again.. i installed Windows XP , Home Edition along with the service pack, and the computer runs great with one exception...it wants to reboot on it own...a box will come up after it restarted and ask if i want to send the error ...most of the time i do, but it just says mainly that it is a driver that is causing this..it ran great till i installed a program called Mail Washer that i bought ...after seeing this problem with the computer rebooting , i uninstalled the program, but still haveing the problem..could it be this program that was causing the problem or is it something else doing it...

    thanks for any help

    Hello Ron,

To start at a diagnoses, stop the system from rebooting:

Right click on My Computer > properties > Advanced tab > Startup & Recovery section > Settings > Un-tick "automatically restart ".

Then take note of what happens and post back. Post the dump file.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Ron,

Try a System Restore just prior to the installation of MailWasher.

If SR says it can't do a restore, post back.

    computer rebooting on it own

hi..here is what has happened so far..i tried to do a system restore and it won't let me...then i received a different error message which is the following:

    page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

    stop:0x00000050(0xb1fffcbf,0x00000000,0xb1fffcbf,0x00000000)

so this is the 2 nd error message that i have had..the other one was :

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    stop:0x0000000a(0x836c0454,0x000000ff,0x00000000,0x804f3b58)

then i tried what Microsoft suggested that i do a automatic repair , and it won't do that...so then i did a repair on a few programs already installed..it has been almost 2 days and i haven't had anymore reboots..not sure what any of this has to do with my problem..maybe i should do a reformat, but hoping that is a last resort.. when i installed Windows XP for the first time in November of 2004 and before i hooked to the internet, i did install the service pack 2 that was recommended.. any ideas is appreciated

thanks people for any help..have i confused any of you??

    Hi Ron,

i tried to do a system restore and it won't let me...

This seems to be a common problem - see a lot of it. Try the following, beats reformating:

One reason - the space allocated to System Volume Information is filled to the maximum which is 12% of Drive space. Neither XP or WinME handle this situation well.

To make room: right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab and for the Monitored drive > settings. Move the slider left to 6% and reboot. This will make room for the Restore Operation. Afterwards, reset the slider back to 12%.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Ron,

well i tried what you recommended, Charles , and still no go ...
Yes, you were able to restore and the problem is still there, or no, weren't able to restore?

still hoping i don't have to do a reformat..
    Two things short of that:

sfc - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disc handy. There is a space between sfc and /

To see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

    Repair of XP: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

In both cases, need the XP cd.

    computer rebooting

hi Charles, now I tried sfc /scannow..and it went though checking...as soon as it was done..it closed up..never ask for the Window XP disk..it does nothing but flash a screen if i just type sfc..and if i type in cmd sfc /scannow i get c:\Documents and Settings\Ron>cursor flashing with the dark screen..
no i haven't been able to do a system restore...
after i did the above and went to my computer and then to manage , expand event viewer then system...i looked at the log i saw where the errors started December 27, 2004 and it said it was a Service Control Manager 7001..
most of the errors that the log is showing are Service Control Manager , System Error , and W32 TIME...
I tried the other day to reinstall ..nothing happened ...now the Windows XP that I own is the Home Edition ..it says version 2002..I also downloaded and installed Win XP SERVICE PACK 2.. I bought this April of 2004 and also bought the home license..i don't know if any of this is useful to you..i did print out everything you have sent me..along with i think is your web site.

not sure where i am suppose to go from here

    Hi Ron,

no i haven't been able to do a system restore...
Ok, that's what I wanted to know. Try the following:

    System Restore doesn't work

One reason - the space allocated to System Volume Information is filled to the maximum which is 12% of Drive space. Neither XP or WinME handle this situation well.

To make room: right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab and for the Monitored drive > settings. Move the slider left to 6% and reboot. This will make room for the Restore Operation. Afterwards, reset the slider back to 12%.

    So try the restore first.

sfc wasn't run at all - it always asks for the XP cd. The instruction are probably ambiguous. The sfc command should be entered into a command box - a window that has white lettering on black background. So the instructions should read Start > Run > type cmd > ok (opens the command box) > type sfc /scannow at the blinking cursor.

    Regards - Charles

This is only a suggestion. Did you check your device manager. Go to Start right click on My Computer\Hardware\Device Manager. Once in the device manager go to View and click on Show Hidden Devices. Check for any exclamation marks in a yellow field or red x'es. Another thing you could try is Booting to the Last Known Good Configuration.
