Pete, here's what I've done to this point.

    1. Totally wiped box clean and re-installed on entire drive, no partitions, XP-SP2 and Office 2003 with all current updates and hardware drivers as well as flashed the bios and updated the chipset drivers.
    2. Installed misc. software necessary for his job.
3 Ran defrag and check disc
    4. before doing any of this, did a reg clean and a couple of spyware scans.

other notes: he's running ie7, adobe reader 8, flash player 9, quicktime 7, and photoshop elements 5. He's also running a few other news script writing applications being as we are a TV news station. No adjustments have been made to his startup file and only a very few services (mostly MS) are running in the background. What else can I do at this this point.

    Thanks,
    Shannon

Is there anything in Event Viewer coinciding with the freeze?

Can you determine from Task Manager if any program is taking up 100% of the CPU when it freezes?

Run a memory check with Windows Memory Diagnostic or Memtest - a clean bill of health here does not necessarily mean no memory problems .....
Hardware problems may be the cause - difficult to isolate, but possibly the PSU.

    Pete,

I've run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Test and it turned up nothing. Also, nothing in event viewer and I can't tell if anything is hogging the CPU.

An addendum to my previous reply...I did go back into event viewer and found serveral warnings...application hang (event #1002) and userenv (event #1517). Hope this info is helpful.

    Hello Shannon,
Did you look in Task Manager > Processes?
You can post the actual lines here:

Right clicking on a line and then clicking on Properties will give you a window with more info concerning that line. You'll see in the top section right below the down arrow, a text graphic symbol. Clicking on that will place the error info text into your clipboard (memory). Bring up Notepad and right click and paste, that will transfer it to Notepad. You can then paste the text into your next post here.

I can't get to the task manager while the computer is frozen so I can't see if anything is hogging the CPU.

If you run Task Manager 'Always on top' (Options menu) and click on the CPU column to sort with highest usage at the top (toggle) you may get a clue when the computer freezes or see what is consuming the greatest number of CPU cycles.
