Everytime I run a Trend Micro virus scan it will reach 90% complete and then my computer will either shutdown or completely freeze. I have contacted both Trend and Windows tech support multiple times with no luck. This only started after an automatic update which installed SP1. Trend tech support did uninstall and reinstall a newer version of Security Pro and it still does the same thing. When it randomly shuts down it will come back on with a message saying "Windows had an unexpected shutdown" "There was a blue screen error caused by somthing to do with USB" Trend and Windows both asked me what I had plugged into the USB. Thats the thing, I don't have and have never had anything installed that uses a USB port. So there is nothing plugged in to USB. Also when I'm on the internet it will say "Internet Explorer has stopped working and is restarting" and then I will lose all my online pages. It will then give a "this was caused by some HP thing" and that I should look online to search for a solution. I am so frustrated with this stupid computer and the thing isnt even six months old yet. I am pretty much computer stupid and really could use some help before I throw this thing out the window.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

First, I suggest you find the drivers disk/s that came with the computer, run them and make sure all the drivers are installed. If it still clashes with SP1, go to the hardware manufacturer's website, look up the models for your system hardware and install any new (updated) drivers. USB drivers will probably covered in the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

Run Error Checking on your drives (it does one at at time). Put Error Checking into Help and Support.

What does HP refer to? Is the computer a Hewlett Packard or do you have a HP printer, etc? Look for updates for any HP hardware drivers and software:
    www.hp.com/support

Uninstall SP1 if you find you cannot get very far with it:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537/en-us
Just run Windows Updates often and get the "Important" ones. Don't get driver updates from Windows Update centre, find them at the hardware manufacturer's website and install them yourself.
Look at if one of the updates causes the problem, isolate and set it "hidden ".

You will need to isolate what driver or software is causing the problem. You can isolate startup software by using msconfig (type msconfig into the Start Search bar). I would start with any HP (Hewlett Packard) programs.

If this is too technical, you will need to do research for yourself, get some help or take it to a repairer (Warranty? Ask the people that supplied the computer if you have not added drivers and software yourself).

    Matt

    Simple suggestion

Why not uninstall the program tied into the problem? Get another antivirus program, install it and then scan the system.
If that solves it, guess what was not compatible.
This has worked for me on more than one occasion.:)
